Gemini LTI Update: Include your LMS sources when using NotebookLM in Powerschool Schoology

NotebookLM adds Schoology course content as notebook sources for Gemini LTI users, letting educators and students ground research in curriculum materials and create Studio artifacts like Audio and Video Overviews, infographics, and slide decks without manual uploads.

When creating a notebook in Powerschool Schoology, Gemini LTI users can now add content directly from their course as sources. This integration allows educators and students to seamlessly bridge their course materials with AI-powered research and analysis, and generate Studio artifacts like Audio and Video Overviews, infographics, slide decks, and more based on their Schoology resources. By automating the import of Schoology course materials, users can quickly ground their notebooks in specific curriculum content without the need for manual file uploads.

Keep your sources up to date with automatic Drive syncing in NotebookLM

NotebookLM adds automatic Google Drive syncing so Docs, Sheets, and Slides sources stay current without manual re-syncing. The update also respects deleted files and changed permissions, keeping notebooks accurate, secure, and easier to manage.

We’re making it easier to keep your sources and insights current in NotebookLM by enabling automatic syncing with Google Drive. Previously, if you uploaded a file in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, you’d have to manually update it in NotebookLM to see the changes. With this update, as the content in your Drive files evolves, the information within the notebook updates automatically to match. This update ensures that you're always working with the most accurate and up-to-date information without the manual effort of re-syncing files.

NotebookLM will also strictly respect file deletions and permissions. If a user’s access to a Drive file is revoked, they will no longer be able to use that file as a source in their notebook. The source will appear in the sources list with a link to the source for the user to request access. Additionally, if a file is deleted from Drive, it will be removed from the notebook as well, ensuring your research environment stays organized and secure.

    NotebookLM by Google

Students can now create personal class notebooks with NotebookLM in Google Classroom

NotebookLM adds personal class notebooks for higher education students 18 and older in Google Classroom, letting them create grounded study tools from class materials. The update brings audio and video overviews, flashcards, study guides, and more, starting on web.

Last year, we announced that educators can use NotebookLM to create teacher-led AI experiences for students in Google Classroom, based on their class materials. Since then, students have been able to access their teachers’ interactive study guides and other learning aids created with NotebookLM for extra practice, support, and learning opportunities. Today, we’re allowing students in higher education who are 18 years of age and older to create their own notebooks for courses in Google Classroom.

From the Gemini tab in Google Classroom, students can use NotebookLM to create a personal class notebook that is grounded in the materials provided by their educator. Personal class notebooks can transform how students interact with these class resources, unlocking new ways to build understanding by converting class materials into interactive and multi-modal study tools. This can help students with:

    Creating custom study tools

    • Students can use the "Studio" panel within their notebook to generate various high-value outputs, including Audio Overviews (podcast-style summaries), Video Overviews, study guides, flashcards, and interactive visual diagrams.

    Summarizing and synthesizing

    • Students can quickly synthesize information across up to 50 source documents per notebook, making it easier to prepare for exams or catch up on missed lessons.

    Direct-to-student support

    • By using the Gemini tab directly in Classroom, students can ask questions and get grounded answers based strictly on their class content, ensuring help is relevant and reliable.

    Enhanced creativity

    • Students can go beyond text by creating infographics, slide decks, and other visual aids to help them internalize and present what they’ve learned.

This feature will roll out on the web first, with mobile following in the coming weeks.

    Getting started

    Admins:

    • To access and create notebooks in Classroom, students must also be in a group or OU with Gemini, NotebookLM, and Gemini in Classroom set to On. Use our Help Center to learn more about turning Gemini on or off for users, turning NotebookLM on or off for users, and managing access to Gemini in Classroom.
      • Note: Ensure roles in Classroom are appropriately assigned to users. Learn more about teacher and student roles here.

    End users:

    • This feature is ON by default for users whose role is defined as “Student” in Classroom, are 18 years or older, are in a higher education organization, and are in a group or OU with Gemini, NotebookLM, and Gemini in Classroom set to On.
    • To create a personal class notebook in Classroom, students can navigate to the Gemini tab in the navigation bar in Google Classroom > Personal class notebooks > Create class notebook. In NotebookLM, a new tab will open where students can edit the notebook and its source materials.
    • Students will continue to have access to teacher-created notebooks from the Classwork item that the teacher attached it to. Students may also see these at the top of the Classwork page if the teacher selects the option to ‘highlight at top of Classwork.’

New ways to customize and interact with your content in NotebookLM

NotebookLM adds richer visuals, better study tools and broader source support, including slide revisions, Cinematic Video Overviews, new infographic styles, improved flashcards and quizzes, EPUB uploads, PPTX export, saved chat history and in-chat artifact creation.

We’re introducing several updates to NotebookLM that give users more flexibility when uploading sources, new ways to create and edit visuals from NotebookLM and improvements to the interactive study tools.

More functions and new visual communication tools

    • Slide revisions: Users can now revise presentation content, ask for changes or fix any issues on both desktop and mobile. Users can submit stylistic or factual feedback for each slide and the slides are regenerated quickly as a new deck in the Studio panel.

    • Cinematic Video Overviews: Cinematic Video Overviews are immersive, deep-dive videos with fluid animations and rich, detailed visuals to help you learn and engage with the topics you care about. Gemini models make hundreds of structural and stylistic decisions to best tell the story with your sources. The videos are ideal for visualizing complex narratives and academic research.

    • New infographic styles: Users can now manually choose from ten new predefined infographic styles to visually summarize their sources. Options include: Sketch Note, Kawaii, Professional, Scientific, Anime, Clay, Editorial, Instructional, Bento Grid, and Bricks. By default, NotebookLM will continue to auto-select the best style for your sources.

    • Improved flashcards & quizzes: Progress is now saved and loaded across sessions when using Flashcards and Quizzes in NotebookLM. Users can also now mark flashcards as "Got it" or "Missed it," shuffle the deck, and use a new results screen to rerun any cards they missed. Additionally, specific flashcards or quiz questions can now be deleted. These improvements are available on both web and mobile.

      • Improvements to flashcards and quizzes are available to all users. Slide revisions, Cinematic Video Overviews, and new infographic styles are available to users over the age of 18.

    Support for more file types

    • EPUB: All NotebookLM users can now upload EPUB files, the standard, open-source file format for eBooks, as a supported source type in NotebookLM, making it easier to research and interact with long-form digital books.

    • PPTX export: Users can now export generated slide decks as PPTX (in addition to PDF).

    Chat improvements

    • Saved and secure conversation history: To support long-term projects, your conversations will be automatically saved and kept private to you. You can close a session and resume it later without losing your conversation history. You can delete chat history at any time, and in shared notebooks, your chat is visible only to you.

    • Artifact creation in chat: You can now instantly transform your chat conversations into stunning Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, tailored reports, and more. Just ask Notebook to create the artifact of your choosing — all without leaving the chat.

Transform sources into structured Data Tables in NotebookLM

NotebookLM introduces Data Tables, a new way to turn source material into clean, structured tables for analysis and export to Google Sheets, helping users organize facts, compare information, and streamline research.

We’re introducing Data Tables in NotebookLM, a new feature that helps you organize and analyze information from your sources in a structured format.

Valuable information is rarely neat. Key facts are often scattered, making manual compilation tedious. Today, we’re making that simpler with Data Tables. NotebookLM now synthesizes your sources into clean, structured tables, ready for export to Google Sheets.

Here are some ways to use them:

    • Prepare for exams with study tables of historical events, organized by date, key figures, and consequences.
    • Turn meeting transcripts into a clean table of action items, categorized by owner and priority. Or build a competitor comparison table analyzing pricing and strategies.
    • Streamline curriculum mapping by aligning state standards, learning objectives, and assessment criteria across your semester plan.
    • Synthesize clinical trial outcomes across multiple papers to track study years, sample sizes and statistics.

Data Tables will be available to users of all ages.

Adding NotebookLM and Gems to Gemini Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI™)

NotebookLM now integrates with Gemini LTI, bringing content-grounded Notebooks into third-party learning management systems so educators can create and publish weekly or topic-based notebooks, and students can use NotebookLM Audio Overview to learn on the go.

    Today’s announcement

Last year, we introduced Gemini LTI™, an AI-powered assistant that can integrate into third party Learning Management Systems (LMS). Gemini LTI™ helps enhance the educational experience for both educators and students by providing AI-driven tools and features powered by Gemini within their LMS environment, such as Canvas by Instructure and PowerSchool Schoology Learning.

Today, we’re excited to announce that NotebookLM is now integrated with Gemini LTI™. As a result, educators can create Notebooks per week/topic and publish them within Gemini LTI. These Notebooks can include relevant teaching materials and act as an additional resource for students to use while learning. In the coming weeks, Gems will also be integrated with Gemini LTI™.

    For example, educators can:

    • Create content-grounded Notebooks that help define their curriculum and empower students to learn at their own pace.
    • Create Gems for FAQs that help students quickly find answers to common questions about assignments, and more (coming soon).

    For example, students can:

    • Learn on-the-go by creating a podcast-like Audio Overview of their course material with NotebookLM
    • Get in-the-moment assistance with real-time coaching using Gems (coming soon).
