Scrivener 3.5.2 is a bug-fix release, addressing the following issues:

• Worked around a bug in macOS 26.1 and 26.2 that causes the outline and page view footer bars to be covered by a white strip whenever a horizontal scroller is visible.
• Fixed bug whereby
  Insert ▸ Bibliography/Citations…
  was available in the main menu even when no citations manager was set in Settings, resulting in a nonsensical warning message when you tried to use it.
• Fixed issue whereby Writing Tools no longer appeared in the editor contextual menu on macOS 26.
• Fixed bug whereby font choosing buttons would draw the font name outside of the button for large fonts.

Scrivener 3.5 requires macOS 11 (Big Sur) or above. Earlier systems are no longer supported by Apple’s latest developer tools.

Scrivener 3.5.1 is a bug fix release for Scrivener 3.5, addressing the following issues:

• Updated app icon to be more like the older icon but using Liquid Glass, getting rid of the border.
• Fixed bug whereby split view dividers could be drawn in the wrong place in some circumstances.
• Fixed issue with headers and footers drawing inverted in the print preview panel.
• Fixed appearance of progress bars in the toolbar search field on macOS 26.
• Fixed bug whereby Quick Reference panels weren’t seen by the find panel, linguistic focus or image tools.
• Fixed bug whereby upon reloading a project, paragraphs with no style could take on the style from the paragraph above.
• Worked around an Apple bug in macOS 26 whereby a translucent bar covers up the top of the outline in full screen mode if the outline has a header bar and is in a window with a toolbar. (Apple bug ID#FB20651946). The workaround for this also restores legibility to outline headers when e.g. a dark background is set for the outliner in dark mode.
• Fixed bug whereby closing a split containing a comment that was being edited in the inspector would cause the text of the comment to stay visible in the inspector, and yet the comment change wouldn’t be saved.
• Fixed a drawing bug where text could seem to disappear below the line being edited in page view.
• Fixed bug whereby UI validation would stop working in windows that were closed and reopened, such as the Settings panel.
• In an attempt to further alleviate an ongoing trackpad scrolling lag, UI validation is now paused entirely during live scrolling.

Scrivener 3.5 requires macOS 11 (Big Sur) or above. Earlier systems are no longer supported by Apple’s latest developer tools.

macOS 26 Support

• Updated for macOS 26 Tahoe support, with many subtle changes to the UI to better fit with Tahoe.
• Scrivener now has a new, Liquid Glass application icon.
• As part of these updates, the minimum version of macOS that Scrivener 3.5 supports is now macOS 11.

Stability Improvements

• A slew of interface validation code has been rewritten to alleviate the trackpad scrolling lag experienced by some users.

Text System

• Worked around an Apple bug whereby lists take on the formatting of the preceding paragraph.
• Fixed an issue whereby list items following styles and other special formatting could become corrupted, caused by recent internal changes to the macOS text system. (Note that this only prevents the problem from happening in the future. Text already affected will need to be edited manually.)
• Added code to work around Apple TextKit drawing bugs whereby adding or deleting lines could result in text below the edited lines not redrawing properly.
• Text caret resizing code has been updated, which hopefully fixes an issue with the text caret sometimes drawing too small or not at all.

Usability Improvements

• Project search no longer closes the composition mode window when the latter is open in a different Space.
• Fixed bug whereby new cards added to the freeform corkboard weren’t added at the right position.
• Fixed bug whereby Opt-dragging cards on the freeform corkboard with the option to create duplicates enabled would mess up the positions of existing cards.
• Fixed issue with being able to take blank snapshots in inspector.
• Fixed issue with being able to spam snapshot taking in the inspector.
• Fixed issue whereby moving paragraphs up and down using the keyboard shortcuts while typewriter scrolling was enabled could cause erratic scrolling.
• Fixed issue whereby redefining paragraph styles containing heading levels did not update the heading level for existing text using the style.

Scriptwriting

• On macOS 26, there is now a slightly longer delay for the auto-complete suggestions list appearing during typing when “Show suggestions list while typing” is turned on in Settings. This is to avoid choppy typing caused by Apple adding an animation whenever the suggestions list appears. This means that if you are, for example, typing a scene heading in script mode, you will now need to pause typing very briefly to see the list of completions. (Or you can hit ⌥ Esc to see suggestions immediately.) Turning on “Reduce motion” in macOS’s accessibility settings removes the animation, in which case Scrivener will use the older, shorter delay.
• Fixed bug caused by undocumented changes by Apple to TextKit that made it so that parentheticals in scriptwriting were capitalised when they should ignore auto-capitalisation. This bug affected systems running 10.15 and higher.
• Fixed bug whereby the option to add scene numbering to script elements would break keep-with-next for those elements when compiling for print or PDF.

Export and Compile

• Kindle (.mobi) has now been removed as a Compile export option, since Amazon no longer supports the .mobi format and now expects ebooks to be submitted using the ePub file format. Existing Compile formats set to use Kindle are automatically switched to use ePub.
• Fixed an issue whereby the Compile window was mostly blank on macOS Tahoe.
• Page Layout no longer requires units entering in the margins text fields.
• Fixed bug whereby exported Word documents would be corrupted if the same link was added to the main text and to footnotes or comments.
• Fixed bug whereby the font of Inspector footnotes and comments was not affected by the Page Layout override option.
• Fixed bug whereby footnotes at the end of a section could result in invalid HTML in ebook export.
• Fixed issue where captions beneath images would not be recognised as captions when exporting to MultiMarkdown formats if a footnote was attached to the image.

UI Fixes

• Fixed bug whereby the option to show compiled footnote numbers in the Inspector would not work if back matter was included in the compiled text.
• Fixed issue whereby disclosure triangles and pop-up indicators would be the wrong colour for selected rows in the outliner.
• Fixed issue with some controls using the wrong text colour when selected in certain areas of the UI.
• Fixed UI typos.
• Many minor UI tweaks to fix issues on macOS 26.

Other

• Updated APA project template for APA 7 (with thanks to Michael Shulman for contributing an updated format).
• To fix a loophole in Scrivener’s trial, the grace session after the trial period finishes is now limited to 48 hours.
• Fixed issue whereby if Scrivener was in quarantine or on a removable disk when launched, it would get copied to the Applications folder if you had chosen “Do not show again” to the warning about this, even if you had chosen not to install to the Applications folder in the past.
• Improved error messages for cross-grade check failures.

Refinements and Changes

Compile

• The compiler now suggests a file name when choosing where to save, and will persistently remember the last file name you used, per project.
• The “MMD OpenOffice Document” compile format, for compiling ODT and FODT files via MultiMarkdown, is now capable of creating an index with grouped, or hierarchical, terms. Refer to the user manual Appendix D5.6 for details.
• Duplicate images will no longer export multiple times when compiling to Markdown or plain-text.

Outlining

• Refined the outline selection behaviour so that right-clicking an item in the binder, outliner, or corkboard will open the context menu without also loading the item in the linked editor.
• The UpArrow and DownArrow keys will now navigate the results list when focus is in the project search field, and Tab will move focus to the results.
• Modifying an item’s custom icon and converting between folder and file types no longer update the item’s modified date.
• Using Documents ▸ Change Icon ▸ Icon from Text…, it is now possible to create empty icons (type in a space).

Text Editing

• Improved the text selection behaviour in Scrivenings so that switching document focus clears previous selections that would otherwise appear active but be unresponsive.
• Improvements to display of inline annotations, particularly across lines.
• Inline annotations can now have their colour changed by using the text colour tool with the cursor anywhere within it, rather than having to fully select it.
• Styles can now be toggled on and off, conforming to standard behaviour in most word processors.
• Spelling suggestions now exclude words with characters unsupported by the dictionary’s encoding (which would use incorrect substitutes if selected).
• Words learned with an initial lowercase letter will also be recognized when written with an initial capital.

Minor Improvements

• Moved the Automatic Quit setting to its own tab in Options:General.
• Updated the Short Story project template with minor text changes.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed a crash that could be caused by typing a wiki-style link in RTF Scratchpad notes when Automatically detect [[document links]] was enabled.
• Fixed a crash caused by using a custom text-based icon that consisted of whitespace characters only.
• Fixed a bug whereby stray spaces at the end of a folder or file group name might not be removed on export, creating an invalid Windows directory that could not be deleted or renamed in File Explorer.
• Fixed the Jump to Selection command not working in Scrivenings mode.
• Fixed a bug that temporarily removed the editor margins after rolling back a snapshot, causing text to go directly to the edges of the editor.
• Fixed a bug whereby toggling Show Invisibles in a Scrivenings session caused the text to scroll to the vertical middle or to the lowest scrolled position.
• Fixed a bug whereby the Page View keyboard shortcut was not disabled in Scrivenings mode, where the command is not available.
• Fixed a bug whereby copying and pasting text with a 6.00inch right-indent would change the indent to 0 in the pasted text.
• Updated the look-up link for Edit ▸ Writing Tools ▸ Look Up in Dictionary.com.
• Fixed a bug whereby newlines were not reliably discovered when using Find Next and Find Previous.
• Fixed a bug whereby creating a new document from the text editor positioned the new item based on the binder selection rather than the editor’s focus.
• Fixed the display of text attributes when selecting text right to left, which previously showed formatting of the text just left of the selection.
• Fixed the highlight search in Find by Formatting, which previously might skip instances or fail when searching for a specific colour.

Refinements and Changes

Writing Tools Support

• Improved support for Apple Intelligence Writing Tools. On systems where Writing Tools are available, a new “Writing Tools” menu appears in the Edit and contextual menus, allowing you to use Apple Intelligence to proofread, summarise, and make rewrite suggestions.
  • Note that Writing Tools are a system feature provided by Apple. Scrivener itself contains no AI. At the time of writing, Writing Tools are only available for US English.
• Writing Tools suggestions now appear in a panel.
• To avoid confusion with this new macOS feature, Scrivener’s own erstwhile “Writing Tools” menu has been renamed Edit ▸ Reference Tools. “Linguistic Focus” has been moved into Edit ▸ Spelling and Grammar. With this reshuffle, the selected word and character counts have been removed from the contextual menu, as the footer bar now shows these selection stats anyway.

Export

• Improved right-to-left text support in ebook export.
• Updated the built-in version of MultiMarkdown to 6.7.0.
• Updated the Basic Pandoc compile format to use ePub version 3 by default.
• Pandoc export now uses the Pandoc 3 --split-level command to split ePub files rather than the old Pandoc 2 --epub-chapter-level.
• The Pandoc Compile setting “Split chapters at level” can no longer be set to anything less than 1.

Miscellaneous Enhancements

• The “Superscript ordinals” setting now works for French as well as English. The option is hidden for other languages, where superscript ordinals are either not used or not available.
• Writing history is now saved during manual saves if any text has changed. (Previously it was only saved on project close or when the date changed.)
• Copying text now includes style information in RTF pasteboard data.
• Added a little extra padding around text in the format bar buttons.
• Updated the .scriv project thumbnail generation code for macOS 15, so that icons continue to display as expected in the Finder.
• Added 0x7F to characters affected by Zap Gremlins.
• Minor updates to the tutorial project.
• Improved documentation in the General Non-Fiction (LaTeX) project template.

Bugs Fixed

Major (Stability)

• Fixed a bug whereby an exception would be thrown if you closed a Copyholder while an inspector or footnote was being edited.
• Fixed bug whereby opening a PDF from project search could cause a spike in RAM usage and hang the app because search highlights were being applied inefficiently.
• Fixed bug whereby editing image names in Scrivenings wouldn’t trigger an autosave and such changes would be lost.

Minor (Usability)

• Worked around a bug in the NaNoWriMo word count APIs which resulted in the word count updater showing the old word count in the success dialogue after updating the NaNo servers.
• Fixed a bug whereby if you collapsed a folder in the binder that contained an item whose title you were editing, the new title could be assigned to an item below the folder.
• Fixed bug whereby the style to delimiter in Script Settings wouldn’t work correctly with auto-complete. For instance, in Stage Play UK formatting, hitting tab after a character name inserts a colon and a tab, and the colon should be bold like the preceding character name. However, the bug meant that the colon would not be bold.
• Hopefully worked around a TextKit redrawing bug that could occur when hitting return or backspacing from an empty line in page layout mode (Text below the return character would not redraw in some circumstances.)
• Fixed a bug whereby freeform corkboard coordinates could get messed up when duplicating folders or when switching between folders or groups using the freeform corkboard.
• Fixed issue whereby not all MultiMarkdown formats were available in the Compile format editor.

Export and Compile

• Fixed a bug whereby recto and verso pages would be off if a cover page was inserted during PDF compile. A blank page is now inserted after the cover if any sections are set to start on a recto or verso page.
• Fixed bug whereby descenders cut be cut off on some pages when printing or exporting to PDF.
• Fixed bug whereby captions would not be converted to MultiMarkdown correctly when beneath a table whose last cell was blank.
• Fixed an issue whereby the current UI language would determine the language used by certain export settings rather than the preferred system language.
• Fixed a couple of bugs that could prevent new page headers from working correctly in RTF and DOCX export.
• Fixed bug whereby a newline at the end of a footnote could cause an extra return character being inserted after the footnote marker in exported ePub files.
• Fixed bug whereby footnotes inside blocks such as block quotes would create unexpected HTML in ePub export.
• Fixed bug in the MMD OpenOffice Document compile format whereby multiple indexing keys in one paragraph would be formatted incorrectly.

UI

• Fixed bug whereby constraints debug info could sometimes be shown (a purple border would appear around the affected window).
• Fixed bug whereby text would be cut off when using page view with vertical text layout.
• Fixed bug whereby “Words to ignore” list could use dark text against a dark background in dark mode, instead of using white text.
• Fixed drawing issues in lined index cards in the inspector.
• Fixed bug that could cause the full screen paper width and height to be wrong in new projects when set using the Use current composition settings for new projects button in Settings.
  • (Note that if you have encountered this bug, you will need to click Use current… again to fix the underlying values.)
• Fixed issue where Compile would allow you to add project styles such that duplicate style names could exist, when this should be prohibited.
• Fixed layout issues and ghost controls in the Footnotes and Comments area of the Compile format editor for plain text.
• Fixed a bug whereby dragging and dropping text could result in the text cursor being too tall.
• Worked around a macOS bug whereby some of the content of the text image resizing panel would be blank in some circumstances if Keyboard Navigation was turned on in System Settings.

Looking for the previous version of Scrivener? If the current version is giving you difficulties and you would like to downgrade, please download 3.3.1, below. All recent updates are incremental bug fixes to the core 3.3.2 update.

Restored Features

• Restored the PDF/X-1a option for PDF export. This had been temporarily removed because of a bug in the development tools that resulted in a crash on Intel machines running Big Sur.
• Reinstated the Auto-Completion settings from 3.3.3 and earlier. These had been temporarily removed to work around a crasher on Sonoma.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed a bug in 3.3.5 whereby only the first footnote on each page was included when printing or exporting to PDF, which was a side effect of some of the page view fixes for Sonoma.
• Fixed a bug whereby “Style to” in the script settings may not work correctly when tabbing after typing was set to insert only a tab.
• Removed the “Reduce file size” options for PDF files from Compile. These options rely on Quartz filters, which no longer seem to work in recent versions of macOS.

Scrivener 3.3.4 improves overall stability, addressing the following issues:

Bug Fixes

• Fixed a bug on Intel machines whereby the effects of the centre and right options in scriptwriting settings were swapped.
• Fixed a crash in page view mode when zoomed on macOS 14.
• Fixed a crash on macOS 14 triggered while typing with auto-completions turned on (especially prevalent in scriptwriting mode). This was caused by a conflict between auto-completions and Sonoma’s new inline predictions. Scrivener’s auto-completion Settings have been updated to accommodate this.
• Fixed a bug that would cause page view to take a long time to lay out, and which could also cause a crash during layout.
• Fixed a crash that could be triggered after closing a project if composition mode had been used.
• Fixed an issue where labels without titles would draw incorrectly in footer bars.
• Adjusted the way line positions are calculated in synopsis areas, which for some users was causing a crash upon entering composition mode.
• Changed the way projects monitor Settings changes to try to work around a rare crash.
• Modernised the way UI translations are stored and handled, which will make improving translations easier in the future.

Scrivener 3.3.3 addresses the following issues from 3.3.2:

• Fixed bug on Sonoma whereby if the ruler was shown in dark mode, the editor would appear blank.
• Fixed crash on M1 machines running Big Sur. (This has involved removing – for now – the Compile option to convert PDF files to the PDF/X-1a format, because the third party library we were using for this was the cause of the crash. We hope to be able to restore this option in the future.)
• Fixed bug with non-English UI files not being updated for 3.3.2.
• Fixed some issues with the size of the new text cursor on Sonoma.
• Removed Apple’s nonfunctional options from the PDF view contextual menu and ensured that pop-up notes in PDF documents appear as read-only.

Refinements and Changes

Ready for macOS 14 Sonoma

• Updated for macOS 14 Sonoma.
• On macOS 14, Scrivener uses Apple’s new system-wide, iOS-like text cursor. Because Apple provides no way of making the new cursor wider, the options in Scrivener’s “Editing” preferences to change the width of the cursor have been removed on Sonoma.

Changes

• Because the version of the MultiMarkdown converter bundled with Scrivener only supports macOS 10.14 onwards, MultiMarkdown formats that require the converter are no longer available on macOS 10.13 unless an external version of MultiMarkdown is installed.
• To avoid inconsistencies in the UI, styles shortcuts are no longer remapped for international keyboards, but always use 1-9.

Bugs Fixed

Major (Stability)

• Fixed bug that could cause a crash in Scrivener on first launch.
• Fixed crash triggered by importing certain Word documents.
• Fixed bug whereby comments spanning more than one paragraph in imported Word documents could cause a crash or not be applied to the correct range.

Minor (Usability)

• Fixed bug whereby “Center” and “Right” paragraph alignments in script settings were inverted.
• Fixed issue whereby spell-checking underlining might only affect partial words.
• Fixed bug whereby “Convert Smart Quotes to Straight Quotes” would not work properly if the system smart quotes contained more than one character.

Import

• Fixed bug whereby structured document text in .docx files would not be imported, which could cause some text to be lost in imported Word files created in Google Docs.
• Fixed issue where comments attached only to empty lines in Word documents would not import properly.
• Fixed bug in Import Styles when importing styles from another project whereby certain styles may not be imported or may replace existing styles.

Export and Compile

• Fixed bug whereby hierarchical levels were not exported properly in .docx files.
• Fixed bug whereby “No Cover Image” setting in Compile for the PDF and ePub formats was never remembered.
• Fixed minor issue with cover declaration in OPF for ePub 2 files.

UI

• Fixed bug on macOS 14 whereby the images of certain buttons would be missing.
• Fixed bug on macOS 14 whereby the title of the selected item in some menus would be missing.

Other

• Fixed issue that could cause third-party tools to report a code-signing error when probing Scrivener’s app bundle.

This update fixes a number of bugs that were found in the initial 3.1.5.0 update, including a flaw in Print/PDF output that could leave some text missing. It is recommended you upgrade at your next convenience, or before compiling anything important to PDF.

Refinements and Changes

• Adjusted the Dark Mode theme to use a darker text highlight for project search results, keeping the light-coloured text readable.

Note: If the Dark Mode theme is in use when upgrading to 3.1.5.1, you will need to switch to another theme and then back to Dark Mode to see the changes.

• Increased the adjustability of the text-to-speech rate and pitch sliders, allowing fine-tuned control of the settings.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed a bug whereby arbitrary chunks of text could be missing from a compiled PDF.
• Fixed an error related to text-to-speech services that occurred on some systems and prevented Scrivener from launching.
• Fixed a bug whereby some imported webpages would not display in the editor and might prompt to select an alternative application to open the MHT file. This also fixes
  • A related issue of the Compile Format Designer window giving the same prompt.
  • An inability to complete the in-software purchasing of an upgrade or cross-platform discount.
• Restored copying and pasting formatted text from Scrivener to other applications like Word and OpenOffice Writer, which broke in 3.1.5.0 so that formatting was lost on paste.
• Fixed a bug whereby most paragraph settings were omitted when using Format ▸ Copy Formatting and ▸ Paste Formatting.
• Fixed a bug whereby after-paragraph spacing did not correctly apply when creating new list items.
• Fixed a bug introduced in 3.1.5.0 whereby the Notes Background colour in the Options:Appearance settings did not affect the interface.
• Fixed a bug whereby a custom Comments & Footnotes Area Background colour was not preserved through closing and reopening Scrivener when applied in any but the Default theme.

This is a major overhaul of the underlying code to modernise the infrastructure to Qt 6. As a result of this framework upgrade, the minimum supported operating system is now 64-bit Windows 10.

Note to Beta Testers: Because of changes to the registry made during the beta period, 3.1.5.0 beta 3 will not update cleanly to the official release. Please uninstall the beta version before downloading and installing the release version.

Refinements and Changes

• Scrivener has had a major framework upgrade to Qt version 6.4.3 and consequently is now a 64-bit application only. This upgrade also has changed the minimum required system version to Windows 10.
• Documents using fonts unavailable on the current Windows machine (such as in a project created on a Mac device) will now display in Arial while on Windows but will use the original font when reopened on a device with that font installed.
• Multiple items can now be loaded in the editor via drag and drop (previously only the topmost binder item in the selection would be loaded).
• The floating Quick Search window (which is used if the toolbar is hidden or the search bar removed from it) now remembers its position when closed and reopened.
• The spell check underline now appears much crisper on HiDPI displays.
• View ▸ Editor Layout ▸ Swap Editors can now have a custom keyboard shortcut applied.
• Menu commands and keyboard shortcuts have been added to Quick Reference windows for toggling and navigating the inspector, the Project Bookmarks sidebar, and the Format Bar.
• PDFs and images loaded in the editor can now be zoomed via the mouse scroll wheel while holding Ctrl.
• There is now an option to include beta releases as part of the automatic check for updates.
• Several default shortcuts have been adjusted for better consistency with Windows standards. Alt+F4 is now assigned to Close Project, and Exit Scrivener (which can close multiple windows, such that they will all reopen on launch per preference settings) has been changed to Ctrl+Alt+F4. Default shortcuts for inserting comments and inline annotations and for scrolling in Page View have also been adjusted to avoid the Alt+F4 combo. (All can be customised in the Keyboard settings of File ▸ Options.)
• Additionally, several default shortcuts using the Windows key have been updated for compatibility with Windows 11, which has made new use of them. These include the shortcuts for Navigate ▸ Inspect ▸ Notes and ▸ Comments and Footnotes, which have changed to Win+Alt+U and Win+Alt+O respectively; Navigate ▸ Outline Groups ▸ Previous Group and ▸ Next Group have changed to Ctrl+Shift+Up and Ctrl+Shift+Down. Format ▸ Paragraph ▸ Increase/Decrease Indents ▸ Increase Indents and ▸ Decrease Indents no longer have a default assigned, as these already use the same shortcuts as Edit ▸ Move ▸ Move Right and ▸ Move Left in text contexts (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Right/Left). If you did not do a fresh install (or if you afterward restored your preference settings), you will need to choose Reset All from the Keyboard tab of File ▸ Options… to fully update the shortcuts.
• Scrivener now encodes the personal word list (“learned” or “ignored” spelling) in UTF-8 and saves to %LOCALAPPDATA%\LiteratureAndLatte\Scrivener\wordlists.txt to avoid conflicting with the ASCII-encoded wordlists.ini file from earlier versions. (The existing word list from Scrivener 3.1.4.1 or earlier will be copied to the new file when 3.1.5 first runs and preserved for previous versions of Scrivener to use, should you need to downgrade .)

Bug Fixes

• Fixed a bug that could crash Scrivener when deleting a justified line item from a list.
• Fixed a bug whereby using Undo after adjusting list items restored the item’s indentation formatting but not the list level.
• Adjusted the list behaviour whereby selecting all items in a list and changing the bullet style away from hierarchical numbering might not set the new style for deeper levels.
• Fixed a bug whereby, after once editing text substitutions, further changes to the substitutions within the session did not take effect until Scrivener had been restarted or Enable Substitutions had been toggled off and back on.
• Fixed a bug whereby toggling most Revision Mode settings from within a Quick Reference window changed the menu appearance but did not affect the editor.
• Fixed a bug whereby dragging and dropping a document to a locked editor failed to break the lock and load the document.
• Fixed a bug whereby the Progress and Total Progress bars were not displaying in the outliner for script documents.
• Removed the nonfunctional document target button from the script mode editor footer. (Document targets and word counts can be set and viewed for script documents in the outliner.)
• Corrected a bug whereby snapshots used the editor background colour set in the Appearance Options rather than the snapshots background colour.
• Fixed a bug whereby Print Current Document would print the full binder outline rather than the outliner contents when focus was in an outliner displaying a multiple selection.

Downgrading from 3.1.5 or higher?

If you are looking to download and install this version to downgrade from a more recent version of Scrivener (3.1.5 or higher), then we strongly recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Instructions for doing so, and backing up your settings, can be found in this knowledge base page.

• Fixed a bug whereby each line break and carriage return decreased the live character count in the footer when using the option to count Characters no spaces.
• Cleaned up the Missing Dictionaries warning to appear only when Scrivener is first launched rather than each time a project is loaded.
• Adjusted the behaviour and warning message shown if the currently-assigned spelling dictionary is missing from the Scrivener installation folder, prompting the user to re-download and temporarily disabling the spell check until the dictionary is available.
• Fixed the Replace and Find Next shortcut behaviour to work with focus in the editor and reassigned its previous default shortcut Ctrl+H to instead open the document Find/Replace dialogue. You can customise the shortcuts from the Keyboard tab of File ▸ Options….

Scrivener 3.3 includes numerous refinements and improves overall stability.

Hotfix 3.3.1 fixes the following bugs in version 3.3:

• A bug that caused a crash when trying to access the colour popovers via the formatting bar.
• Fixed an issue where a purple debugging interface would appear around some window elements. If you do not see this fix in your copy, then download a fresh version from the link above, as it was fixed in place rather than creating a new version number.

Refinements and Changes

Compile – PDF

• Compile now supports generating PDF files in the PDF/X-1a format, which is required by certain self-publishing services (such as IngramSpark). This is turned on by default for the “Paperback” Compile formats, and can be turned on for custom formats in the “PDF Settings” area. (This replaces the option for PDF/X-3.)

Compile – Ebooks

• Improved ebook formatting of superscript and subscript.
• Updated the Ebook Compile format to preserve indents in tables of content.
• Improved HTML cover page output for ebooks.
• The .separator CSS for ebooks is now included before styles CSS, so that styles can be used to override it.

Compile – Docx

• Docx export is now more careful about avoiding duplicate image data where the same image with the same file name has been included multiple times.

Compile – MultiMarkdown and Pandoc

• The Compile option to convert Markdown in text and notes to rich text no longer changes smart quotes.
• Updated Compile formats that target Pandoc to remove closing hashes from titles for improved compatibility.
• New projects created from templates containing no MultiMarkdown metadata in Compile no longer auto-populate the metadata with author and title.
• When compiling to MultiMarkdown and Pandoc formats, if a section layout’s title is set to use no hash marks, it now has no empty line added beneath it, allowing for more custom use of titles. (You can still create an empty line by adding a return character to the title suffix.)

Compile – General

• Where annotations are denoted by square brackets in export formats, the brackets now skip whitespace. (Also applies to Export Files.)
• When Convert smart to dumb punctuation is selected in the Compile settings, en-dashes are now included in the conversion.
• The option to convert linked images to embedded images during Compile has been removed as this behaviour is now standard.

Importing Files

• Updated the way custom Office importers and exporters are installed to abide by new Apple requirements.
• When importing Word DOCX files, the range to which comments are applied is now preserved.
• Comment chains in RTF and DOCX files are now imported into a single comment (previously only the first comment in a chain was imported and subsequent comments were ignored).
• Docx import now supports links in footnotes, endnotes and comments.

UI Tweaks

• Composition mode now leaves space at the top of the screen for the “notch” on modern MacBooks.
• The binder now shows expansion tool tips for truncated items.
• When using one of the View ▸ Editor Layout split commands on a Quick Reference panel, the synopsis will now be shown by default rather than an empty split.
• The outliner option View ▸ Outliner Options ▸ Use Fixed Row Height now has the same availability as other outliner options.
• Improved conversion of colours when converting between inline and inspector comments using the Transformations menu.

Miscellaneous

• Updated the “General Non-Fiction (LaTeX)” project template.
• Updated the links in the comic script project template.
• Removed limitation whereby backups could not be created from projects with tildes in their file names.
• Added support for “Translate” in the editor contextual menu.

Cursor Hotfixes

If you installed Scrivener or updated it on the 18th of January and are experiencing the following issues with the cursor, then download a fresh copy of the software, and run the installer over your current installation to apply a patch that fixes these bugs:

• Cursor visibility, selection drawing in the corkboard, or areas of the inspector that edit plain text, such as the synopsis or custom metadata fields.
• Scaling of the hairline cursor (if the block cursor option is disabled) when text editing areas are zoomed in or out.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed a crash on File ▸ Print Preview or File ▸ Print Current Document when titles were selected for inclusion in the Print Settings.
• Improved editor accessibility, providing better compatibility with tools like ProWritingAid and Grammarly.
• Fixed a bug introduced in 3.1.2 that prevented document groups from loading as a Scrivenings session unless Treat all documents with subdocuments as folders was enabled in Options.
• Fixed several cursor drawing bugs, including the cursor replicating when using the keyboard to move from the start of a new line and part of the cursor failing to blink at the start of a new line with a line height multiple greater than 1.0.
• Fixed a bug whereby the block insertion point width failed to scale with the editor zoom level.
• Improved the appearance of highlighting, linked comment and footnote markers, search highlighting, style backgrounds, and other text adornments in the editor that are affected by certain types of line spacing.
