Dynamic Spatial Parameters
Sync, zoom, and pan across multiple maps for deeper dynamic geospatial analysis. With responsive spatial parameters, you can filter data by map viewport, scale marks based on zoom level, and keep multiple maps in sync—all without reloading.

Performance Insights Dashboard
Speed up performance issue resolution. Admins can now analyze dashboard performance with a new built-in report that quickly provides dashboard insights in an easy-to-use interface directly in the Cloud. Filter by specific workbooks and analyze which visualizations impact load times to quickly identify and troubleshoot slow-performing dashboards.

Create more dynamic visualizations by using the value of parameters in the workbook to set axis ranges. This feature allows you to select different parameters to use as each axis range. You can have a single dynamic axis extent (just start or end) or can set both extents using compatible fields.

Native Lightning Web Component for Tableau

Embed Tableau into Salesforce
Take your data insights where your users are. You can now embed Tableau Vizzes into Salesforce via Lightning Web Component and seamlessly authenticate with Trusted Tokens using Connected Apps. This allows for a more seamless analytics experience where CRM Analytics charts and Tableau visualizations can be viewed in the same experience, all within Salesforce. Tableau Component filter parameters also allow filters to pass from a CRM Analytics Dashboard to a Tableau Component and vice versa to keep them in sync.

Tableau Cloud add-on for Google Workspace

Get a preview of visualizations in Google Docs
Get data insights in the flow of work. With our latest partnership with Google, users can quickly preview a Tableau Cloud visualization from within Google Docs. With the Tableau integration with Google Smartchips for Google Workspace, links pointing to a Tableau Cloud visualization are instantly converted to thumbnail views showing the Tableau visualization’s name, last updated date, and a preview image. Thumbnails are generated on the spot, always showing the latest data! You can also click to open the visualization in Tableau Cloud for further exploration. Available now in the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Embedding Playground

Develop code in an interactive environment

On-demand access

Establish a connected authentication system
On-demand access allows Embedded Analytics Usage-Based Licensing customers to establish a connected authentication system between their application and Tableau Cloud. With on-demand access, customers can use Tableau’s Connected Apps functionality to assert users and permissions at the time of access. You can now maintain a single source of truth for user identities, roles, and privileges in just your application instead of having to create, sync, and/or maintain those accounts in Tableau too.

Fill down and running calculations

New multi-row calculation capabilities
Get faster data insights as multi-row calculations are now even more powerful and more accessible for you. Now, you can use the visual calculation editor to replace null values with the last non-empty value in a column, also known as "fill down," and create running calculations. Alternatively, you can write custom calculations using the new

RUNNING_SUM() , RUNNING_AVG(), and LAST_VALUE()

functions in the calculation editor.

Stratified sampling in Prep

Get a representative sample of your data
When working with large datasets, you can use stratified sampling to capture a sufficient number of records from an infrequent category as you explore, clean, and shape your data. The new stratified sampling algorithm allows you to group by a specified column and then sample data within each subgroup. Prep will returns an equal number of rows distributed across the selected column for grouping to ensure you get a representative sample.

Set header and data start row for CSV/Text Files

Explicitly specify header and data start rows
Tableau Prep users can now easily specify the schema of CSV/text files structured when the header isn’t on the first row. Instead, you can set the header and/or data start rows explicitly in the settings of the input step for CSV/text files then move on to subsequent cleaning and shaping!

Write datasets to Data Cloud from Prep

Save Tableau Prep outputs to Data Cloud
Write datasets from Tableau Prep into Data Cloud. Once you've set up an Ingestion API connector and deployed to a Data Stream, you can save your outputs to Data Cloud. With this feature and the previously released Data Cloud connector it's easier to connect Data Cloud and Tableau Prep.

Virtual connections support all connectors in Tableau

Provide a central access point to your data
Data access, management, and security become seamless with virtual connection enhancements. Any connector type supported in Tableau is now also supported in the Virtual Connection editor. The connectors include support for Microsoft OneDrive, Apache Drill, Apache Spark SQL, Cloudera Hadoop Hive, Datorama, Dremio, IBM DB2, Kyvos, and Qubole Presto.

Bridge for Linux

Run Tableau Bridge on Linux
Make your Tableau architecture more streamlined with support for Linux. You can now deploy the Tableau Bridge client within a container on Linux, which eliminates the need for a Microsoft Windows-only desktop application. This allows for automation and streamlining of Tableau Bridge to meet the large-scale enterprise needs through containerized workloads.

Bridge support for embedded data sources

Keep embedded data sources fresh
Make connecting your data easier with Bridge enhancements. Tableau Bridge now supports embedded data sources and published data sources, allowing Tableau Cloud authors to use the data source type best suited to their needs. This update also significantly reduces the time and effort required to migrate from Tableau Server to Tableau Cloud. Existing content requiring Bridge can now be migrated as-is rather than converting embedded data sources to published ones.

Activity Log enhancements

Monitor site activity
Gain greater control over your Tableau environment. You can now use the Activity Log as the single source of truth for site audits and track site activity in near real-time. Tableau introduces over 100 types of usage events to the Activity Log, including access, create, update, and delete events for all content types.

Admin Insights Tokens data source

Monitor authentication tokens
Keep your site safe and operational by monitoring authentication tokens. Admin Insights now includes a Tokens data source, which is a list of the unexpired Personal Access Tokens (PATs), OAuth client tokens, and OAuth database tokens. Using the Tokens data source, you can create a report that shows when tokens will expire, so you can proactively renew the tokens needed to keep your site running smoothly. You can also easily see who has PATs and tokens assigned to help you identify any tokens that may need to be revoked.

Suspend extract refreshes for inactive data sources

Easily manage your refresh load
Automatically suspend extract refresh tasks for inactive published data sources to save backgrounder and server resources. This feature applies to full extract refreshes that occur more frequently than once a week. Incremental refreshes and those that occur less frequently than weekly are not impacted.

Autosave enhancements

Automatically save changes for new workbooks
You now get even more support from the Tableau autosave feature to improve productivity. The latest enhancement to autosave automatically saves modifications made while editing a new, never-published workbook to a draft. You no longer need to publish your work immediately to preserve your progress. This update allows you to pick up where you left off conveniently, iterate on your work, and refine it before deciding to publish.

Login flow enhancements

An improved login experience
Tableau Cloud has now updated its login page to improve discoverability and ease of use. Tableau Cloud home page now has improved text rendering and displays contextual information on the Site URI through a Learn More link. The home page also auto-populates the username on the login page when a cookie exists for a user from previously having selected the “Remember me” option and reduces the number of steps to display the site list for applicable users.

Editable viz alt text in Desktop

Edit automatically generated alt text
You now get enhanced control over viz alt text. You can now edit automatically generated alt text. By default, Tableau provides automated screen reader text, ensuring a description is announced by screen readers for all online visualizations, including client and server-side rendered and embedded visualizations. Now, content authors can edit the alt text from either the Data Guide panel or by selecting Accessibility in the Worksheet dropdown. Authors can also add up to 2500 characters of alt text, providing deep insight into the contents of the visualization. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, these capabilities are now available in Tableau Desktop 2023.3.

Command cancellation

Pause auto updates
Easily cancel a time-consuming command to drive analyst productivity and reduce frustration. You can now pause updates to a visualization when you execute a command that takes a long time. You will be prompted with a cancel button to pause all auto updates. When you want to re-enable auto-updates, you can use the menu bar at any time.

Accelerators in the Desktop start pane

Get easy access to Accelerators
Find the right Tableau Accelerator for your needs with ease. The updated Accelerator experience on the Desktop Start Pane gives you access to a rotating selection of Accelerators and better differentiates between Accelerators and Sample Workbooks. You can now quickly launch one of the featured Accelerators, jumpstart your analysis, or browse for more using the in-product Exchange.

Table fonts for web authoring

Specify font settings on the web
Get greater control over the look of tables. You can now set the fonts for tooltip, totals, and grand totals on a worksheet while web authoring. With greater control over font options, you can better differentiate totals and grand totals so they stand out from the rest of your data. Font options will dynamically display based on the contents of the viz.

RHEL 9 support for Server

Deploy Tableau Server to RHEL 9
Tableau gives enhanced deployment flexibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) support. Customers can now deploy Tableau Server to RHEL 9 as a supported OS. This release of RHEL is designed to meet the needs of the hybrid cloud environment and is ready for you to develop and deploy from the edge to the cloud.

Line Patterns

Customize Line Marks
Line Patterns offer new styling capabilities, allowing an author to select any trend line to be represented as a solid, dashed, or dotted lines. This new capability makes it easier to convey nuance when representing multiple trends, where styling can help to convey when certain lines represent unique context, such as thresholds or modeled data points. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, this capability is now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Unified Tooltips

All the relevant information about your in-shelf pills in one place
Get more context for your in-shelf pills with new tooltips. Unified Tooltips combine up to six previous tooltips into one that prioritizes information based on relevance. Get the field name, table calc details, and field comments in a single place. Any error messages or filter information now displays in the same tooltip. This unified tooltip is available for pills on all shelves. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, this capability is now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Amazon Athena connector: 3rd party IdP support

Connect to data
Use industry leading 3rd party identity providers such as Azure AD or Okta to manage secure authentication to Amazon Athena data sources. Using the OAuth configuration for an identity provider, you have increased flexibility and security of connections, along with multi-factor authentication, to important data in Athena. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, this capability is now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Image Role enhancements

Add web images dynamically
Image Role is easier and more flexible with the recent enhancements. Image Role has expanded image file type support, now including those in SVG, WEBP, JFIF, ICO, BMP, and GIF format in addition to images in PNG, JPG, and JPEG format. Image Role can also now handle up to 100 images per column and increased image fetching to allow images up to 200kb. You can also access the Remove requirement with no need for Image Links to contain extensions. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, these capabilities are now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Data Driven Alert REST API

Programmatically create data-driven alerts
Our new REST API endpoint enables you to create Data Driven Alerts for visualizations with a single axis. Now you can programmatically create data-driven alerts so key people are notified in their email, Tableau site, and connected Slack workspaces when data reaches thresholds. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, this capability is now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Geospatial analysis enhancements

Analyze geospatial data
Geospatial analysis with Tableau is more comprehensive than ever. New enhancements to the spatial calculation language allows you to answer a broad range of questions from your geospatial data. Outline creates new formatting options, ShapeType enables new pivots based on geometry type (e.g. distinct treatments of roads vs. regions), and Length creates new opportunities for route planning. We've also made it easier to bring spatial geometries into Tableau by supporting the full GeoJSON language during import. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, these capabilities are now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Usage Metrics enhancements

Track content shares
Total shares is now displayed as a Metric in the Usage tab along with total favorites and total views. With these insights, analysts can better understand engagement so they can build content that resonates with their audience. Viewers can leverage Usage Metrics to validate that the content is widely used and trustworthy. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, this capability is now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Card navigation improvements

Improved navigation for keyboard
We've made navigating the content grid view more accessible by adding full keyboard navigation support, including selection and batch actions.The focus indicator has also been improved, so you can better understand which item you're interacting with or navigating to. Content metadata is also easier to access via a popover widget. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, this capability is now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Analytics Extensions enhancement

Compress requests and responses
Now you can compress requests sent to and responses from your Analytics Extension server. This will help you avoid running into payload constraints when using Table Extensions that involve large datasets. To enable this capability, Analytics Extensions admins can set flag 'gzip_enabled' to True. Previously released in other Tableau products in Tableau 2023.2, this capability is now available in Tableau Server 2023.3.

Tableau Cloud Manager, Table Viz Extension, Spatial Parameters, Tableau Cloud App for Microsoft Teams, and more

Tableau Admins can effortlessly grow and manage their analytics in the Cloud with Tableau Cloud Manager. This simplifies the expansion and management of your cloud analytics environment while helping ensure you meet data residency requirements and maintain governance.

Note: This feature will be deployed in waves to customers. Admins will receive an email 2 weeks before they receive this feature.

Evolve from legacy reporting to visual analytics while meeting your users' current needs. Tables are critical visualizations for analysts and help them inspect data as text and conveying details at lower grain. With Table Viz Extensions, you can add detail tables and grid views to dashboards for users who prefer traditional reporting views.

We’re bringing the full Tableau experience to geospatial data with geospatial support for Parameters. Spatial Parameters create rich, interactive dashboards so you can ask and answer questions about geospatial data. Spatial Parameters allows the end user to select individual points, which then get passed as input into calculations enabling dynamic behavior based on the selection.

With the new Tableau Cloud App for Microsoft Teams, users can effortlessly incorporate data-driven insights into their daily workflows, leading to faster, more efficient decision-making. This integration enables real-time data sharing, allowing users to easily share Tableau visualizations, dashboards, and Pulse Metrics directly within Teams chats and meetings. This promotes a more data-driven culture by ensuring everyone can work together more effectively with access to the same data and analytics within their workflow.

When you’re finished, simply save to Tableau Online or Server so your content reflects the latest changes for others in your organization.

Jumpstart your Salesforce Connection

You can now log into your Tableau Online account using Salesforce login credentials, and a newly enabled Integrations Tab makes it simple to tap into and analyze your Sales Cloud and Service Cloud data—all via a ready-to-go workbook that keeps your data fresh.

Native Intelligence Connector

The Intelligence Connector is now available natively out of the box in Tableau Desktop, Prep, Server, and Online. The Intelligence Integration connects Tableau to Intelligence, creating an easy way for customers to consume harmonized Intelligence reports in Tableau.

Area spatial calculation

With the area spatial calc, you can now measure the square area of your selection on a map in units that you specify. Combined with the power of spatial joins, answering location-based questions is easier than ever. For example, you can now easily calculate the total acres of multiple parks you've selected on a map. Or, a business could use this to calculate population densities to inform about where to place a store.

Map layer control

When viewing a worksheet or dashboard that includes a map, consumers now have the flexibility to control the visibility and interactivity of the marks layers without editing the workbook. When enabled by the author, users can simply use the new toggle settings to customize the map view to best answer their own location questions and analysis.

Tableau Server on Linux in a container

Containers are fast becoming the standard way for businesses to leverage the cloud by increasing availability, orchestrating large deployments, and sharing infrastructure. This deployment option adds the ability for our customers to run Tableau Server on Linux in a single container, making production and development deployments easier, faster, and potentially more cost effective.

Write to Google BigQuery

With 2021.2, Tableau Prep expands its output capabilities to include Google BigQuery, in addition to the existing databases outlined here. This enables you to add or update data in Google BigQuery with clean, prepped data from your flow each time the flow is run.

Tableau ID + MFA

We're excited to provide Tableau ID + MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) to our Tableau Online customers which provides them with the ability to enable MFA on their sites. MFA is one of the easiest, most effective tools for enhancing login security, and safeguarding your business and data against security threats.

New Data Sources for Admin Insights

We're excited to introduce two new Admin Insight Data Sources called 'Groups' and 'Site Content' created to help Site Administrators monitor content governance and group membership.

Web authoring improvements

Further customize your dashboards with the ability to format worksheet backgrounds, titles, and captions on the web. You can now create parameter actions and set actions within web authoring. You can now define and edit Top N and Condition for discrete filters, unlocking more advanced filtering for data source and on-sheet filters.

Multiple Analytics Extensions per site

Multiple Analytics Extensions per site allows organizations to use multiple analytics extensions within each Tableau Server or Tableau Online site. Teams can now use advanced analytics and predictions from Python and R, multiple different TabPy servers, or Einstein Discovery and TabPy in visualizations all in the same environment. Administrators can configure multiple connections in the Site Settings page, and connections are now added at the workbook level, either in web authoring or on publish.

Data freshness improvements

Build solutions that connect Tableau much more efficiently with a variety of data freshness technologies and use it for operational monitoring and analytics scenarios. You can now push updates to extract files through the REST API and HyperAPI on Tableau Server or Online to enable more flexibility, efficiency, and ultimately improve the freshness of your data.

Support for OAuth and OpenID Connect in the Connector SDK

Extend the Native OAuth Service and Connector SDK to consume customer provided OAuth configurations.

Writable field descriptions

Similar to how you can update table column descriptions, you can now update published data source field descriptions. Instead of having to re-publish the data source every time, simply click on a field name and edit button to add, change, or remove the description.

Bulk Scoring in Prep Web Authoring and Prep Conductor

Write ML predictions (scores) from Einstein Discovery directly into your data sets in Tableau Prep Web Authoring and Tableau Prep Conductor. This integration allows you to score data in bulk including writing in key drivers of predictions and improvements.

Bulk Rename in Prep Builder and Prep Web Authoring

With Bulk Rename, you can now rename multiple fields at one time in Prep Builder and Prep Web Authoring, rather than individually change each field name. You can now add/remove/rename a prefix at the start of a field name, add/remove/rename a suffix at the end of a field name, as well as do pattern matching for 'find and replace' within a field name.

SAP HANA performance improvements

HANA bind variable support is now enabled by default. Bind variables allow HANA to route correctly in a multi-node HANA environment, and allow for plan cache re-use for any HANA environment. In addition, maximize Tableau’s use of HANA’s bind variable capability when connecting via JDBC.

Tableau Mobile for Intune (Android)

Tableau Mobile for Intune is a new app that provides a quick and secure way to view, analyze and leverage the data in your organization. The new app includes a newer design that is faster and more intuitive, an improved search and browsing experience consistent with Tableau Server and Tableau Online, as well as enhanced offline capabilities that are quick to load and offer richness and interactivity for visualizations.

For organizations that are already investing in machine learning, Amazon SageMaker for Tableau provides a unique opportunity to communicate and share ML with anyone, via self-service analytics. Tableau Cloud Advanced Management customers can now manage their own encryption key, which will encrypt all data extracts on their site. Customer-Managed Encryption Keys (CMEK) leverage Salesforce Shield Key Broker and allow customers to create, rotate, audit, and delete their key from the Tableau Cloud UI. The Master Encryption Key is stored in Salesforce's KMS Service and the key is unique to your site. Leveraging CMEK on top of built in encryption storage provides a defense-in-depth strategy to protect your data and meet tough compliance standards.

Now, you can add additional Backgrounder resources when needed and spin them down after peak times, giving you control over the cost vs. performance tradeoff.

Selected recommendations automatically update the query sent to Ask Data and the visualized answer that is returned.

Ensure members in your organization are aware of and can access relevant content more quickly. Tableau checks if the people you shared content with have the proper permissions to view it. If you share with someone who does not have access, you will now be prompted to manage permissions and grant access immediately after sharing.

Collections allow members across your organization to gather and organize content from across your site on Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server. Admins can now enable or disable Collections for an entire site with a single click. Pre-existing Collections will be restored if you re-enable Collections.

We’ve streamlined the experience for organizing your data into hierarchies and folders. When you create a hierarchy or folder, the data pane automatically scrolls to the newly created hierarchy or folder position and selects it for you, so you can continue interacting with it without having to stop.

Improved web authoring capabilities
Author on the web with more flexibility
You can now change the field data type through the data pane while authoring on the web. This ensures your data is analyzed correctly. The experience is the same as it is with Tableau Desktop: click the icon to the left of the field name and choose a new data type from the drop-down list.
Web authors now can format the borders and dividers of totals and subtotals cells within a table to select their preferred style. To improve the user experience, a dynamic display shows users the curated formatting settings that only apply to the visualization type and selected cells–giving a clear path of which formatting options you can change.

Data Stories on all data sources
Get to insights fast using any data
You can now add automated plain-language summaries to dashboards using Data Stories on any data source. When setting up Data Stories, you will be notified that your data is sent to a cloud-hosted service. If you’d instead like to restrict use of Data Stories, administrators can disable this feature for all users through site settings.

Email and Slack notifications for Explain Data
Share insights from Explain Data
Now you can quickly share insights from Explain Data through Slack and email. Recipients are notified on Slack with an image and description of the explanation and can click a link to open the explanation in Tableau.

Advanced Management for Tableau Server customers leveraging the Resource Monitoring Tool can now choose to run the PostgreSQL and RabbitMQ services that support the Resource Monitoring Tool Server externally in AWS utilizing PostgreSQL via AWS RDS and RabbitMQ via AWS AMQ. When a data quality warning is configured, you can enable a high-visibility warning across downstream assets to inform users of potential issues with the underlying data.

External Assets can now be moved into projects. This change democratizes metadata curation by utilizing existing project permissions to allow more users to manage descriptions and data quality warnings. This removes site admins as a potential bottleneck and gives metadata ownership to users who know the data best. Additionally, this makes External Assets more discoverable for content creators.

There is now a new developer experience for creating connectors to web application data via APIs. Web Data Connector 3.0 provides a toolkit with everything you need to develop a connector in a single package. Additionally, web data connectors are now .taco files so they no longer need to be web hosted and can be easily integrated across the entire Tableau platform.

We continue to extend the availability of Ask Data! Adding Ask Data to a Dashboard is now smoother than ever, supported end-to-end in Tableau Desktop. Analysts can decide to show or hide the Ask Data Configuration toolbar, so business users can easily add visualizations to Pins, publish them as workbooks, or even share them with others.

Metrics improvements
More flexibility for your Metrics
Create metrics to track key data points without having to access your dashboards and edit them at any time. You can now come back and edit existing metrics to change the historical comparison period, the date range used by the metric, and the status indicators. Additionally, you can dynamically explore different date windows while analyzing the metric without editing the configuration.

Column reordering enhancements for Prep
Drag-and-drop to reorder columns in the field list view.
When working with really large tables in Tableau Prep, instead of manually dragging and dropping each column in the profile pane, users can now drag-and-drop to sort data columns in the field list view. Once the user has specified their column order, the order is maintained across the entire flow and the final output after the flow is run.
