Directory Opus 13.25.4 (Beta)
Directory Opus adds beta updates with new folder expansion and thumbnail preferences, a refreshed SFTP engine set on by default, a new scripting format helper, and several fixes for context menus, renaming, dialogs, and layout loading, plus an updated 7z.dll.
⚠️ This is a beta release. It may be unstable. Some text may not be translated yet. Use at your own risk!
Download manually, or use Help > Check for Program Updates (if beta versions are enabled in Preferences / Internet / Updates).
Note: See the release notes for 13.25.1 for information how to try the new SFTP code.
Preferences
- Added Preferences / File Displays / Folder Expansion / Expand with mouse wheel over expand button option. When enabled, you can expand/collapse folders by turning the mouse wheel while hovering over the expansion button.
- Added Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced / thumbs_disable_internal to disable internal image formats for thumbnails (similar to older viewer_disable_internal for viewers).
SFTP
- New SFTP code now goes to the server's initial/home directory on connection, if no initial directory is specified in the FTP Address Book.
- New SFTP code is now enabled by default.
- New SFTP code, if it can't load a private key, now reports more detail to the FTP Log.
Scripting
- Added StringTools.FormatAs() method. Allows a value to be formatted in the same way as the evaluator's As operator. For example, FormatAs(109283832, "size") returns "104 MB".
Miscellaneous / Fixes
- Improved aborting scripts with detached dialogs from the Task Manager.
- Fix for context menu items in submenus added in a particular (using SubCommands rather than ExtendedSubCommands) way in the registry not working when selected.
- Fixed duplicated context menu items when right-clicking a toolbar favorite in a sub-folder and then right-clicking a branch or the toolbar background.
- Fixed long delay if you switched back to the old SFTP code and loaded a layout (or previous windows) that contained SFTP paths.
- Fixed button-menus being created instead of simple buttons when dragging commands like Delete (which have a button-menu on the default toolbar) from the Commands tab.
- Fixed Rename crash if a code like {name|noext} was used in the new name field.
- Fixed a couple of issues with /* */ style comments in functions.
- 7z.dll updated to 26.03

Directory Opus 13.25.3 (Beta)
Directory Opus adds interactive folder creation in a chosen path, clearer File Types labels for Open With overrides, and safer .txt double-click handling, while also fixing context menus, USB exports, and high-DPI checkbox sizing in this beta release.
This is a beta release. It may be unstable. Some text may not be translated yet. Use at your own risk!
Download manually, or use Help > Check for Program Updates (if beta versions are enabled in Preferences / Internet / Updates).
Note: See the release notes for 13.25.1 for information how to try the new SFTP code.
- You can now run the CreateFolder dialog interactively in a different folder to the current source. For example, CreateFolder D:\Temp ASK=usepath would create new folders in D:\Temp no matter what the current folder was.
- The File Types dialog now labels file types that have been overridden by 'Open With' in the list, to reduce confusion (e.g. instead of two "TXT File" entries, you might now have one "TXT File" and one "TXT File (overridden)").
- .txt files are no longer "sniffed" on double-click to see if they are really image files, to prevent potentially misidentifying them if the text encoding happens to generate a false match with a known image format.
- Fixed background context menus not getting given the current path properly (introduced in beta 13.25.1).
- Fix for USB exports not including the new SFTP binaries when applicable.
- Fix for some checkboxes being too small on some high-DPI machines. (Workaround for Windows inconsistency between machines with identical settings.)

Directory Opus 13.25.1 (Beta) - how to try the new SFTP code
Directory Opus ships a beta release with a new SFTP codebase for testing, plus per-folder tile and thumbnail sizing, new scripting and evaluator capabilities, smarter FTP tools, and several fixes and stability improvements.
This is a beta release. It may be unstable. Some text may not be translated yet. Use at your own risk!
Download manually, or use Help > Check for Program Updates (if beta versions are enabled in Preferences / Internet / Updates).
New SFTP code now available to try
The replacement SFTP support is now available for testing. This is currently off by default, and can be turned on by setting Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: [FTP] ftp_legacy_sftp to False, and restarting Opus.
For the time being, please only turn this on if you want to help us beta-test the new code. There is also a new ftp_copy_buffer_size_sftp setting in the same place for tweaking copy buffer sizes when using the new SFTP code.
See the next post for more details about the new SFTP code.
Preferences
- Added options under Preferences / Folder Tree / Contents / This PC to hide specific drives from the folder tree.
Folder Formats
- Tile size (for the Tiles display mode) can now be configured through the Folder Formats system, letting you have different tile sizes on a per-folder basis.
- You can now specify width and height separately for thumbnail size via the Folder Formats system (previously thumbnail sizes overridden by Folder Formats would always be square).
Commands
- Added Prefs SCRIPTUNINSTALL command. Lets you delete an installed script, triggering its OnDeleteScript method if it has one. Specify the name of the script file on disk as the value of the SCRIPTUNINSTALL argument.
- Added Prefs SKIPINUSE argument. When the configuration backup tool is launched with SKIPINUSE specified on the command line, it will skip over any files in the User Data folder that are in use and can't be opened.
- Opus functions now support multi-line comment blocks using /* ... / (as well as single-line comments using //). As with // the / code must appear at the beginning of a line.
Evaluator
- The evaluator now supports functions. Functions are defined similar to javascript (e.g. function name(a, b) { ... }). Variable scoping is also similar to javascript - functions can access variables defined outside them, but variables defined inside them don't leak to the outer scope.
Scripting
- Added FSUtil.HMAC script method. Use as e.g. FSUtil.HMAC(key, message, type). Key and message are Blob objects, type is a string specifying the hash algorithm (e.g. "sha256"). Returns the HMAC as a Blob.
Other changes
- Resizing thumbnails with Ctrl+Mouse Wheel now preserves their current aspect ratio rather than resetting them to 1:1.
- Added an option to the Script Editor options dialog to expand the Include files branch by default in the editor.
- Set AUTOSIZECOLUMNS=col:xyz, override now turns off the specified column's fill/collapse modes and max width.
- Main window titles now include a warning when Redirection Guard is on.
- The File Types "Edit Action" dialog is now resizable horizontally even when it's in a mode that can't be resized vertically
- "Rename" from the context menu for FTP/SFTP files now does an inline rename instead of opening the Advanced Rename dialog.
- Improved logging for FTPS SSL connection failures.
- Dragging from the FTP Address Book, or using the Create Shortcut option in its context menus, now creates an Opus button (.dcf file) which runs a command to go to that Address Book entry. (Previously, it would create a .url file which wasn't very useful for SFTP or non-anonymous FTP.)
- Blocked drag & drop of URLs on to the Favorites Bar from creating favorites (since they don't work). You can however still drop a URL on the button for a favorite directory to create a shortcut on disk inside that dir.
- Adjusted our Properties dialog hook to make the Catalogue Signatures list (normally only visible for Microsoft binaries) DPI scale its column widths, since doing some multiplications is apparently still too complex for Microsoft to do themselves.
Fixes
- Improvement to shift/ctrl/alt key detection in Replace dialog.
- Prints from the Text plugin now always use black text on a white background, instead of the configured on-screen colors.
- Fixed evaluator groups not applying to certain columns (e.g. Date Taken).
- Fixed sharing a script to an existing file merging rather than replacing.
- Fix for context menu items in submenus added in a particular way in the registry not working when selected.
- Fixed regression in 13.25 with Rename REGEXP with an empty "from" pattern (not explicitly supported, but did used to work and does again).
- Fixed Favorites ALIAS=list, builtin generating an empty list.
- The Print Folder tool no longer shows the uncompressed size of archives when the option to calculate sub-folder sizes is turned on.
- Fixed the FTP file/folder Properties dialog's Download button making you type the filename yourself instead of filling it in by default.
- Fixed the FTP > Site Properties dialog switching to "ask for password" mode when standalone (not opened via the FTP Address Book).
- Fixed evaluator not allowing an unnamed map to be passed as a function argument.
- Fix/workaround for Windows 11 blocking Opus from accessing junctions, depending on the process which started it. This should fix error 448 when using OneDrive Personal Vault.
- Possible fix for crash ID 789.
- Possible fix for crash ID 792.
- Fix for crash ID 797.
Details about the new SFTP support
Please note that the new SFTP code is not enabled by default yet. See below for instructions on how to give it a try.
New SFTP Code
This update includes our new SFTP code, re-written from the ground up.
The new SFTP code isn't enabled by default. To switch to the new code, set: Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: [FTP] ftp_legacy_sftp = False (Then click OK or Apply, and restart Opus via File > Exit Directory Opus.)
In time we will change the default, and eventually remove the old code. For now, please only switch to the new code if you want to help test it.
Main features of the new SFTP code, when enabled:
- Support for newer encryption protocols.
- Faster file transfers (may require buffer size tuning at the moment).
- Process isolation (smaller attack surface; protects main process from crashes).
If using an outgoing firewall, you may need to allow dopusnet.exe through. - Connections can be monitored in Opus's Task Manager.
- The location bar now shows an "SFTP" prefix when on SFTP sites (rather than "FTP" for both types).
When reporting SFTP issues:
- Please turn on the FTP log (from the main menus, FTP > Display FTP Logs)
- The details there may be relevant, including the actions leading up to the problem.
- When posting details from your logs, please anonymize any internet addresses, (user)names, paths, and so as appropriate for your privacy and a public audience.
Limitations and known issues:
- This new code is not thoroughly tested. For now, please only enable it when working on data you have backup copies of!
- Existing Address Book entries will work without modification. However, there is not yet support for:
- IPv6
- Hiding .dotfiles
- Sounds
- Speed limits
- Proxies
- Changes to Address Book entries won't always affect existing connections without a restart.
- Buffer size for most file transfers is configured via ftp_copy_buffer_size_sftp in Preferences. (See manual for detailed description. Note that it does not affect existing connections.)
- Public / private key authentication is supported, except:
- PuTTY's Pageant isn't currently supported. (Specify the key file directly instead.)
- PuTTY's v3 key format doesn't currently work. (Most others do, including PuTTY v2.)
- Not all features of the multi-line Create Folder dialog work yet (e.g. making multiple directory levels at once).
- When things fail, error codes are usually generic at the moment (but you can open the FTP Log panel for detailed information).
- SymLinks should work, but are not currently displayed in bold, and the Target column is not populated.
- Transfer Time column not currently populated.
- Linux attributes/permissions are not currently shown or editable.

Directory Opus 13.25
Directory Opus ships a major update with expanded customization, richer status bar and evaluator options, new viewer and command controls, broader scripting support, and usability fixes across file displays, search, thumbnails, and installer dark mode support.
Directory Opus 13.25
Download manually, or use Help > Check for Program Updates.
The following is a summary of new features and other significant changes from 13.24.
See the New Releases forum for detailed release notes for the various beta versions from 13.24.1 onwards.
Note: This release of Opus is signed with a brand new certificate. Please don't be alarmed by any Microsoft SmartScreen warnings you may encounter.
Preferences
- Added an option to Preferences / File Display Modes / Details / Appearance (and a separate one for Power Mode) that lets the vertical padding of file display group header items be configured.
- Added Preferences / File Operations / Copying Files / Include duplicate count of 1 option (and a similar option for the shortcut template). If turned on a duplicate count of 1 (i.e. the first duplicate) will generate something like "xxx - Copy (1)" rather than "xxx - Copy".
- Added Preferences / File Display Columns / Options / Show abbreviation for "bytes" in file sizes option.
- Added Preferences / File Displays / Status Bar / Scale images to match the font size option.
- Added Preferences / File Displays / Options / Info Tips / Display checkerboard behind transparent images option.
- You can now configure separate actions for FAYT Folders Mode for Enter + shift/ctrl/alt.
- When running in a non-English language, the Preferences search now includes the original English-language names of the various Preferences pages in the search index (so you can, for example, search for "language" when running in another language and find the Language page).
- With custom window frames (toolbar moved into titlebar), default light and dark themes now apply a color accent to active windows rather than inactive ones. (Can be changed via the Window Title colors under Preferences / Colors and Fonts / Directory Opus Colors / Toolbars.)
- You can now configure what the right mouse button does in the standalone image viewer (Preferences / Viewer / Standalone Viewer / Mouse Buttons). If set to anything other than Context Menu, you can still display the context menu by holding the shift key when you right-click.
- When the GPU-accelerated viewer is enabled you can now configure the scaling mode exactly (rather than a single "high quality" option). Different modes can be selected for when the viewer is zoomed in (>100%) and zoomed out (<100%).
- The Toolbars / Icons page in Preferences now has a button to disable individual icon sets.
- Added a new default evaluator column, Image Size. Displays the size of an image in megapixels.
- Added options for the External Tools image formats to let a configured format override the internal image handling for both the viewer and thumbnails.
Status bar
- You can now use links in the status bar to add clickable links to run commands or show popup menus.
- Use href to specify a command to run (e.g. About).
- Use id to specify the name of a toolbar to show as a popup menu (e.g. Commands).
- Use text to specify a tooltip (shown on mouseover).
- Added status bar {qkh} code. Displays an icon that provides a tooltip showing the FAYT Quick Keys modes.
- Added Preferences / File Displays / Status Bar / Custom Codes. This page lets you define custom codes for the status bar using the evaluator. It lets you make more complex evaluation clauses (over multiple lines) and use them in the status bar using a simple {code}-style insertion code. You can also pass data through to the evaluation clause, e.g. {code:data} which will be available in the evaluation clause in the args value.
- Redesigned how the various status bar modes are selected/described on the Preferences Status Bar page. Split the definition editor to a separate page with a dropdown to let you select which definition to edit, meaning the editor is now much larger.
Commands
- Added Show VIEWERCMD=acceleration and Show VIEWERCMD=scalemethod commands, which let GPU acceleration and the scaling methods be modified for the current viewer without having to change the global Preferences. These commands have also been added to the default Viewer toolbar (reset to Factory Defaults or find them in Customize / Default Toolbars).
- Added Show VIEWERCMD=selectregion command to the standalone viewer. By default this command selects a default region (respecting aspect ratio if one is set) which can then be modified. If a region is already selected it clears the existing selection. You can also specify the size of the region to select:
- As a percentage, e.g. Show VIEWERCMD=selectregion,100%
- As a width, e.g. Show VIEWERCMD=selectregion,1024. The height will be calculated automatically from the aspect ratio of the image.
- As a size, e.g. Show VIEWERCMD=selectregion,1024,768. The selection will be centered in the image.
- As a full rectangle specified as x,y,w,h; e.g. Show VIEWERCMD=selectregion,0,0,1024,768.
- The Show VIEWERCMD=backcol command can now be told to allow a checkerboard background behind the image while changing the remainder of the background color. For example, Show VIEWERCMD=backcol,#000000,allowcheckerboard.
- Command state tests like @ifset, IsChecked() etc can now use the Toolbar command to test if a toolbar is visible in a specific position rather than just on/off (e.g. @toggle:if Toolbar "MENU" STATE=top).
- Added CLI command CLOSETIMEOUT and AUTOSEARCHTIME arguments, which allow the configured FAYT timeouts to be overridden when initiating the FAYT via a command. You can specify the value 0 to disable auto-search / auto-close for that specific invocation.
- Added the CLI KEEPOPEN argument, which lets you invoke the FAYT and have the "keep open" pin selected by default.
- The CreateFolder MULTI argument can now be used in non-interactive mode, to indicate that the "create multiple folders" logic should still be used. This lets you have a command that creates multiple numbered folders, e.g. CreateFolder NAME="New Folder <5>" MULTI).
- You can now use {cp} with the CLI QUICKSEARCH command to specify where the cursor is positioned in the inserted string. For example, CLI QUICKSEARCHENGINE=everythingglobal QUICKSEARCH comment:"{cp}" would put the cursor between the two quotation marks.
- @if and similar command testing for Show VIEWERCMD=backcol now recognises the allowcheckerboard keyword.
- Added Set DELAY=x command which waits for x milliseconds.
Evaluator
- Added try/catch/throw to the evaluator. Lets you catch errors from functions and continue processing rather than have the evaluation aborted.
- The evaluator now supports suffixes to specify the types of numeric variables.
- u - unsigned int
- u64 - unsigned int 64
- i64 - int 64
- f - double
For example, 1024u64 is the equivalent of 1024 as uint64.
- You can now add/subtract milliseconds from evaluator date variables with the 'i' prefix (e.g. date += 100i; to add 100ms)
- The evaluator DatePart() function can now use ii and iii for milliseconds (iii is zero-padded to three places).
- Evaluator columns can now return group information (when operator == "group") as a map, the same as for evaluator groups. This lets the group order, collapse state and optional markup for label headings be controlled.
- Added some numeric limits as predefined values in the evaluator: maxint, minint, maxuint, maxint64, minint64, maxuint64, maxdouble, mindouble.
- Added evaluator LanguageStr() canonical strings for "megapixels" and "mp".
- Added click_button value to evaluator functions (fits alongside click_pt and button_rect). Returns "l", "m" or "r" to identify which mouse button was clicked, or empty string if not applicable/known.
- Added evaluator Delay() function.
- Evaluator columns can now appear in more than one column category.
Scripting
- StringTools Encode/Decode methods now recognize the "WebCharset" keywords from the MIME types list in the registry (e.g. "shift_jis" is the web charset name for "iso-2022-jp").
- Script columns can now have their type set to "bool". The data provided to a bool column should be either false (0) or true (anything other than 0 - usually 1 or -1). The column value will be displayed as Yes/No in the current language, and will sort with Yes before No by default.
- The Viewer script object now has an id property which returns a unique ID number for that viewer instance.
- The Viewer script object now has a vars property which provides a Vars object local to the viewer. Each standalone viewer has its own set of variables. Viewer variables are not persisted to disk and only last until the viewer is closed.
- A script can now pass an Image object as the value of the Set BACKGROUNDIMAGE command to directly set an image as a background image. This implies "local" mode (e.g. BACKGROUNDIMAGEOPTS=local is implicit, even if not specified).
- Listviews in script dialogs have a new Sort Notify property. If turned on, clicking a column in the listview's sort header will generate a "sort" event rather than automatically sorting the list alphabetically by the chosen column. The 1-based column index will be provided in the Msg.index property. Clicking the current sort column generates a negative index (use this as a cue to sort in reverse order). You can use the Control.SortItems method to sort the list.
- The Control.SortItems method now takes an optional second argument.
- When used with a custom sort callback, the second argument lets you specify the current sort column. The arrow indicator in the sort header will be updated to reflect the new column.
- When given a column to sort by, the second argument is a flags value. Currently the only flag defined is "n", which performs a numeric string sort rather than a standard lexicographical sort.
- You can now change a script dialog palette control's options from code using the style property. Valid style flags are:
- a - Palette type: alpha
- t - Palette type: transparent
- d - Palette type: default
- n - No arrow
- c - Can disable
- m - Decimal
- The FolderEnum script object now supports wildcard and attribute filtering for the folder enumeration.
- Use the wildcard property to set a wildcard pattern (prefix with "regex:" for regular expression). For example, folderEnum.wildcard="a*"; would only return filenames beginning with 'a'.
- Set an attribute filter with attrinclude and attrexclude. For example, folderEnum.attrinclude="hs"; would only return items with both the hidden+system attributes set.
- The FSUtil.Run() method can now wait asynchronously for the launched program to complete and then send a message to a script dialog with the results. To use this, pass the dialog object as the sixth argument to the method (or as the dialog property if using map arguments). The return value from the Run() method in that case will be an ID number which identifies the task. Your message loop will receive a "run" message with this ID as the data property. The state property indicates whether the program was launched successfully or not, and the object property contains the RunResults object.
- In script dialog listview controls, you can now add multiple items/subitem values using a Map to specify the column names directly. The AddItem and InsertItemAt methods accept a Vector of Map objects. Each Map should contain key/value pairs for the column data to insert. By default the column titles are used as the keys but you can specify different (language-neutral, for example) keys with the new SetColumnPropertyNames method (this new method takes a Vector of strings; each string corresponds to a column in the listview.)
- In jscript scripts, jscript plain dictionary objects are now accepted as an argument documented as taking a Map. So for example you can pass {key:value, key:value, ...} to a method that accepts an Opus Map object.
- Script columns can now appear in more than one column category. The "category" property can specify multiple comma-separated category keywords.
- Scripts that generate toolbar buttons can now pass an Image object for the ButtonData.image and ButtonData.image2 properties.
- Added Filter.anyword and Filter.eval script properties.
- Added button_rect, click_pt, and click_button properties to Func script object, so scripts launched from buttons can also determine where the button was clicked.
- Added Point script object (similar to Rect) - returned by Func.click_pt property.
- Added diagnostic warning if a script's method names cannot be queried because it has names which only differ by case (ActiveScripting limitation).
Other changes
- Added a command to the Rename preset management dropdown menu to save the current dialog settings as the defaults for the Rename dialog. The defaults will be used when the Rename dialog first opens (unless overridden by command line arguments).
- Added "Clear History" command to the context menu for the edit field in the Set Description dialog. You can also delete individual strings from the dropdown history by pressing Shift+Del.
- Shortcuts created by Opus now set the Initial Directory field to the parent for files, and leave it blank for folders, similar to what File Explorer does.
- If a search launched from the FAYT is bumped to a new tab because the current tab is locked, the FAYT is now opened in the new tab with the same search string so that the search can be easily modified.
- File display toolbars now use the spacing configured under Preferences / Toolbars / Appearance if it is smaller than their standard 1x1 spacing.
- Automatic Formats list in Preferences now preserves selection and scroll position when reacting to changes (both new folders being added, and old folders being removed).
- Added a context menu for the evaluator groups Preferences page.
- Time format strings can now use ii and iii for milliseconds (iii is zero-padded to three places).
- Junctions made with Opus now set the 'PrintName' field in the filesystem (previously this was left empty). Should not have any effect on how they work.
- Numeric string comparisons now ignore thousands separators (so, e.g. "10,000.txt" will sort after "12.txt")
- Matching brace highlighting in the script editor now takes comments into account.
- Fixed occasional distortion in GPU viewer when panning a magnified image.
- Changed how the codepage name lookup table is built for the StringTools Encode/Decode script functions.
- Cursor position is now preserved when the FAYT is bumped to a new tab due to searching in a locked tab.
- Date columns from the shell (e.g. System.ItemDate) are now handled as dates rather than as text, which means they're formatted better and sort properly.
- The function editor now notifies you in real time if you specify a hotkey that's already in use, rather than waiting until you click OK to close the dialog.
- Added {thumbnailf} code for a new "flexible" layout of infotip thumbnails.
- The FAYT "keep open" pin button is now shown for all FAYT modes rather than just search.
- The FileType command's PATH argument now supports aliases.
- You can now use \n in in markup to insert a line break in the tooltip.
- Added support for compressed SVG files (.SVGZ)
- The status bar definition editor now remembers its settings (visible spaces, etc).
- The InfoTips and Tiles fields in the filetype editor now have syntax highlighting and features like "show visible spaces".
- Removed the length limit on the Set Description dialog. You can also resize this dialog now to make it easier to edit long descriptions.
- In thumbnails and tiles modes the "Spread excess space between the columns" option now adjusts the horizontal position of each icon to center it within its column.
- If lossless JPG rotation is enabled/possible, the image converter's flip operation is now lossless (previously, selecting flip would disable the lossless option).
- For viewer plugins, increased the buffer size for the lpszHandleExts field.
- Added Vietnamese language support.
- The installer now supports dark mode (matches the Windows setting).

Other changes
