Upcoming migration from ZooKeeper to KRaft for Apache Kafka on Heroku

Heroku begins migrating Kafka cluster infrastructure from ZooKeeper to KRaft in October 2026, with maintenance notifications and no customer action required.

On October 19, 2026, we’ll begin migrating Apache Kafka on Heroku cluster infrastructure from ZooKeeper to KRaft. This change modernizes how clusters manage their internal metadata. Heroku will notify you via email when maintenance is scheduled to perform this migration on your Kafka cluster. No action is required from you.

    Python 3.15 is now available

Heroku now supports Python 3.15.0 for Python apps, with guidance to use the 3.15 major-version alias for ongoing security updates.

Python 3.15.0 is now available for use by Python apps on Heroku.

See the Python 3.15.0 release announcement and What’s New In Python 3.15 to learn more about the new major version.

See Specifying a Python Version for details on how to configure the Python version for your app.

We strongly recommend that you use a major version alias when specifying a Python version for your app instead of pinning to an exact patch version, so that your app receives the latest Python security updates each time you build it. For example, use 3.15 in your .python-version file instead of 3.15.0.

Go 1.27.2 and 1.26.9 are now available for use by Go apps on Heroku.

In addition, we have updated the Go 1.27 and 1.26 version aliases to resolve to these new Go patch versions.

    Heroku-22, Heroku-24 and Heroku-26 stacks updated

Heroku updates its heroku-22, heroku-24 and heroku-26 stack base images with upstream security and bug fixes, rolling them out automatically across runtimes. Container-based apps must rebuild their images to receive the updates.

We have updated the heroku-22, heroku-24 and heroku-26 stacks to pick up security and bug fixes in upstream packages. The new base images for each stack will roll out automatically to the Common Runtime over the next 48 hours, followed by Private Spaces.

If you use Heroku’s default buildpack-powered build system/stacks, you don’t need to redeploy your app to receive these changes. For Cedar-generation apps, each time a dyno starts, the slug is overlaid on top of the most recent base image. For Fir-generation apps, the built image is rebased on top of the most recent base image.

If your app uses Heroku’s container stack, you must rebuild your app’s Docker image to pick up updates in the base image specified in your Dockerfile.

See this Dev Center article for an overview of the package versions available in each stack’s base image.

The Heroku-22 stack is deprecated and will reach end-of-life on April 30th, 2027. Upgrade to a newer stack as soon as possible. See the Heroku-22 End-Of-Life FAQ for more details.

    Python 3.14.8, 3.13.16, 3.12.15, 3.11.17 and 3.10.22 are now available

Heroku now supports updated Python patch releases across versions 3.10–3.14, with major-version aliases pointing to the latest updates.

Python 3.14.8, 3.13.16, 3.12.15, 3.11.17 and 3.10.22 are now available for use by Python apps on Heroku.

In addition, we have updated the Python 3.14, 3.13, 3.12, 3.11 and 3.10 major version aliases to resolve to these new Python patch versions.

We strongly recommend that you use a major version alias when specifying a Python version for your app instead of pinning to an exact patch version, so that your app receives the latest Python security updates each time you build it.

See Specifying a Python Version for details on how to configure the Python version for your app.
