Lunatask Release Notes

NOTE

Since this is a mobile-only update without an accompanying desktop release, the changes listed here apply specifically to the mobile version of Lunatask.

Features

• Actually useful notifications are here — showing task and habit names while still maintaining your privacy and end-to-end encryption
• You can now swipe down any modal screen on iOS, such as task or note detail, to close it without reaching for the “Close” button
• Added Lockdown Mode detection on iOS and corresponding functionality on Android devices
• Added a “Delete relationship” option to the long-press quick actions menu on avatars in the relationship tracker

Improvements

• Major performance improvements across the board – including faster app startup, better in-app runtime performance, smoother animations, faster rendering of long lists, improved editor loading speed, and better overall responsiveness
• Refreshed UI on both iOS and Android and improved compatibility with iOS 26 and Android 16
• Confirmation dialogs for destructive actions, such as deleting a task, now show the confirmation button in red text on iOS
• You can now long-press and drag in a single gesture to move a task or habit on the calendar, where this previously required two separate gestures
• Additional calendar-related improvements, along with other user-facing and internal changes

Fixes

• Fixed an internal rendering issue that could cause tasks to seemingly disappear from the list, leaving empty space after some operations
• Fixed color and contrast issues in dropdown menus and various pickers in dark mode on Android
• Fixed all-day calendar events being shifted one day on some Android devices
• Fixed a race condition that could sometimes prevent the editor from loading, mainly seen on Android
• Fixed an issue that prevented tasks and habits on the calendar from being moved or resized on some Android devices
• Fixed moving tasks back to “Later” or “Uncategorized” via the long-press actions menu not closing the menu when using Eisenhower Matrix workflow
• Moving a task between areas or goals no longer switches the currently opened list
• Various reliability, stability, and quality-of-life fixes across the app on both platforms

VERSIONING CORRECTION

During Lunatask’s 0.x and 1.x eras, we followed semantic versioning. However, our versioning scheme gradually drifted away from it after the release of Lunatask 2.0.

With this update, we’ve corrected that. We reviewed our past releases and recalculated what the correct version number should be according to semantic versioning, which is why this update is released as v2.36.0.

Improvements

• Our iCloud, Fastmail, and generic CalDAV integrations were rewritten, fixing various issues, edge cases with recurring events, and more
• New W keyboard shortcut to move a task into “Waiting” is now available in Kanban workflow
• Many internal upgrades, migrations to a new bundler, packager, and other technical (not user-facing changes) changes in our desktop stack, making space for exciting new features coming in the future
• Initial user onboarding on desktop was rewritten and improved, in addition to other minor copy changes and improvements across the app

• You can now search for text inside a currently opened note (on desktop)

Improvements

• Priority picker shows more prominently in task detail and long-press actions menu on mobile
• Estimate presets were added to task detail on mobile, mirroring those available on desktop
• Moving a task between goals via the right-click context menu no longer switches currently shown task list on desktop
• The order of options “Pick a date“ and “Plan into my day“ has been flipped in task detail when using Plan Your Week workflow on mobile
• Onboarding improvements and other minor fixes

Fixes

• Moving a task between goals no longer switches the currently shown task list on mobile
• Today and past dates are now disabled in the dropdown for creating future tasks and reminders in workflows where that option doesn’t make logical sense (i.e. “defer a task until today/yesterday”) and breaks the app’s prioritization system by resetting the task’s age
• Fixed “Later“ tasks not having “Later“ option checked in long-press actions menu in Plan Your Days workflow on mobile
• Additional safety check was added so any potential leftover tags don’t show in note filter in “All notes” after a note is deleted
• The regression in a recent desktop update that caused “Escape” keyboard shortcut to stop working for a while after some actions is now fixed

Improvements

• You can now press Escape to exit a goal list and return to the main list of tasks for an area in our desktop app
• Double-clicking an area or goal in our desktop app now opens their respective settings
• The option to show/hide progress bar is now available in our desktop app directly in the right-click menu on goals
• Initial new user onboarding was rewritten in our desktop app and also updated on mobile
• “Integrations” section in the app’s settings was updated, now featuring and linking more community-built extensions and tools
• Our upcoming feature roadmap is now linked directly in the app
• Minor visual, such as to the calendar’s habit widget, and other mainly onboarding improvements

Improvements

• When searching on desktop, the first result is now preselected – so you can open it instantly by pressing Enter, without needing to press Arrow Down first
• Search now ignores partial matches inside words – giving you cleaner, more relevant results
• The widths of area/goal list (in Tasks) and note list (in Notes) are now kept in sync, preventing visual layout shift when switching between the two sections on desktop
• Goals section below the area picker no longer shows when a selected area has no goals on desktop
• Tomorrow calendar now appears a bit earlier when resizing the calendar on desktop
• Our Markdown editor now auto-links pasted URLs using tel, mailto, ftp, and lunatask protocols

Fixes

• An experimental set of safeguards, drift corrections and other detection and auto-recovery mechanisms was added to our mobile Markdown editor to prevent glitches like disappearing text, cursor, and other related issues – primarily addressing Android’s IME composition bugs, out-of-order events or broken sequences firings, selection rendering bugs, etc.
• Fixed a regression in a recent rewrite of pickers on desktop, where pressing Tab selected an option instead of simply moving focus to the next element
• The width of various pickers (for status, motivation, etc) was adjusted, addressing sizing regressions after a recent rewrite of pickers on desktop
• Lunatask doesn’t yet support RTL layout – yet on Android, a system-level “best-effort” RTL mode was causing inconsistent and broken UI, so it’s now disabled until proper RTL support is implemented to avoid confusion
• In the Microsoft Store version of the app, the in-app “launch on startup” option has been disabled due to a bug in Electron and now links to Microsoft’s guide for alternative ways of setting startup apps
• Start/end date pickers in task repeat settings on desktop no longer render beneath the bottom toolbar in some cases, previously making some dates unreachable
• www subdomain is no longer stripped when normalizing Server URL for CalDAV integrations
• Other minor visual fixes on mobile – such as corrected rounding in the area picker, preventing “good morning” messages from appearing over the onboarding modals, etc.

Improvements

• Tag filter now only shows tags inside the currently selected notebook
• The input for adding tags now visually separates tags used in the current notebook and those used elsewhere
• Open notes in the mobile app now feature a button in the header to quickly jump to tag picker
• “Display and filter options” in the notes section were reordered so tag filtering is shown first on mobile
• Label “All notes” on top of the note list was changed to “All notebooks” when no notebook is selected
• You can now close any picker, dropdown, popup, or menu anywhere in the app by pressing Escape on desktop
• Priority picker in task detail on desktop was redesigned a bit to take up less horizontal space
• Chromium runtime was hardened even more by disabling more unnecessary features that are usually enabled by default
• A few new “good morning messages” were added

Fixes

• The logic for figuring out which time blocks to mark as complete was vastly improved when completing “many-times” habits via the habit tracker itself and not the calendar – fixing seemingly stuck red time badges, etc
• When pressing Escape to close task detail on desktop, the task now correctly remains selected
• Fixed other conflicts where pressing Escape on desktop may have closed not just the currently opened picker, but also the whole task, person detail, etc.
• People’s initials generator function was improved to ignore certain leading characters (like quotes, etc)
• Fixed an issue where people’s initials may not have always been shown in uppercase letters on mobile
• Fixed the mobile app opening or flashing briefly in light mode even when the system is set to dark mode, caused by a regression in previous update
• Task repeat settings on mobile no longer calculate and show next occurrences when “after completion” is checked
• Fixed a couple of misaligned error messages across the mobile app and a few other minor visual fixes

ISSUE CONNECTING GOOGLE CALENDARS IN MAC APP STORE VERSION

The v2.1.22 update is now available on the Mac App Store, temporarily reverting the Mac App Store version back to the previous in-app calendar authorization flow. Lunatask for Mac in DMG format continues to use the new browser-based flow without any issues.

Improvements

• Google Calendar authorization was moved from an in-app window into your system browser
• Security and privacy were hardened by disabling certain default Chromium behaviors that could have also triggered false positives in the past in some antivirus software (such as, Avast)
• While a note is displayed in full-screen mode, clicking “Notes” in the main menu on desktop now exits full-screen instead of doing nothing
• Minor data sync improvements on mobile, onboarding, and other internal changes and upgrades

Fixes

• Auto-lock is back! The issues that previously caused this feature to be temporarily disabled are now fixed – protected notebooks, journal, and relationship tracker now properly lock when you background or close the mobile app.
• Fixed a regression where pressing Escape wouldn’t close the quick-entry mood tracking and journaling popup on desktop
• Addressed reported issues of existing tasks sometimes displaying as blank after adding additional new tasks on mobile

Improvements

• Our desktop app now remembers scroll position when switching between notes or going elsewhere in the app and then back
• You can now long-press any area or goal in the area picker to open its settings on mobile
• You can now press Escape to defocus the editor when editing notes, so shortcuts for navigating to next note or delete current one are immediately available again
• Minor naming and help text changes

Fixes

• Fixed annoying scroll to the end of a note when placing a cursor at the start of a line and being just a few pixels off
• Fixed red area badge incorrectly showing also for tasks in archived goals
• Fixed duplicating a task from logbook keeping previously assigned priority

Improvements

• Added new “Extended family” relationship category for those with larger families, where a single “Family” category may not be enough
• In area settings, you can now configure where newly created tasks are initially placed when using “Plan Your Days” workflow (whether in “today” or “later”), to mirror a similar setting available in “Now/Later” and “Kanban” workflows
• A new D keyboard shortcut to duplicate a task in-place was added to our desktop app. Additionally, there’s now L keyboard shortcut to copy a deep link to selected task, note, or person.
• “Next to work on” overview now shows only the first 10 tasks for areas using “Priority List” workflow to avoid too much clutter
• Right-click context menus on desktop now show keyboard shortcut hints when there’s one for a given action
• Formatting toolbar’s “Checklist” option was renamed to “Subtasks” in task descriptions
• Better onboarding into our reconnect reminder, as well as a few minor onboarding improvements to tasks and goals
• Our iOS app now offers the option to disable list animations in its accessibility settings
• Update Note API and Delete Note API are now available with corresponding “Copy ID” buttons now also available in our apps

Fixes

• Fixed formatting toolbar not working in goal description/breakdown on mobile
• Pressing Escape in dropdowns for date picking now just closes the picker, with the event no longer propagating further to other shortcuts listening for the same key (e.g. which previously caused closing of person profile or currently edited task)
• This update also includes several attempts and workarounds to fix labels across the app being cut off on some Android devices

Improvements

• Email address suggestions now show up above the keyboard on login screen on iOS
• We now use a numeric one-time sign-in code and allow iOS to fill it in from the login email automatically
• “Today” tasks no longer show a grey “Today” badge in the “Next to work on” overview when using “Plan Your Days” workflow, as it has been somewhat redundant
• Improved workflow of syncing last reconnect date with the date of newly added happy memory in a person’s profile – our desktop app now asks you if you’d like to update it only after you enter the name of the memory for a more natural flow

Fixes

• Fixed viewport-sizing regression when switching to logbook from “Next to work on” overview on desktop
• Fixed some buttons with confirmation dialogs in our desktop app not working after the last update (e.g. buttons to delete calendar integrations)
