What's New in v50: Read the Avalanche Bulletins, Trace the Wind, Plan the Passage

Windy releases version 50 with new Avalanche Danger maps, Wind Trajectories, sailing plugins, Garmin widgets, and an improved Garmin Edge data field. It also adds more frequent AROME forecasts, smoother webcam playback, smarter maps and search, new European radars, and updated Android and Wear OS widgets.

Version 50 helps you discover more, plan smarter, and stay safer — wherever the sky takes you.

    Highlights

    • 🏔️ Avalanche Danger — new layer with official avalanche bulletins
    • 🎈🔥 Wind Trajectories — new built-in plugin for hot air balloon for pilots and outdoor safety teams
    • ⛵ Passage Planner & The Buoy — new Windy plugins for sailors
    • 🛩️ Windy METAR Widget — new Garmin widget for pilots
    • 🚴 Windy Data Field on Garmin Edge — with apparent and forecast wind toggle for cyclists

Avalanche Danger — a new layer

Heading into the backcountry? The new Avalanche Danger layer brings official avalanche forecasts straight to the map — across the European Alps, the US, and Canadian mountains.

Built for ski tourers, splitboarders, mountaineers, and guides who plan their lines around the snow.

Tap any colored region to open the full Avalanche Bulletin: the European 5-level danger rating (Low → Very High) by altitude band, the day's avalanche problems (New Snow, Wind Slab, Persistent Weak Layers, Wet Snow, Gliding Snow) with critical altitude and expected size, plus the issuing authority (AINEVA, LWD, SLF, and other official forecast services), validity window, and the day's Avalanche Activity and Snowpack Structure outlook — straight from the source.

Find it under "Warnings" section in the menu.

    Wind Trajectories — a new built-in plugin

The Windy picker has a new arrival for everyone who watches the air move. Wind Trajectories traces where the wind would carry you at any altitude and any forecast hour — scrub the timeline and the path redraws for this afternoon, tomorrow, or beyond.

Built first for hot air balloon pilots, but useful far beyond the basket: glider and light aircraft pre-flight planning, anticipating headwinds, tracking how a storm cell will travel, predicting where wildfire smoke or pollen will land.

Note: trajectories show horizontal drift only — ascent and descent aren't modeled.

Want ascent and descent factored in? The community-built Traj plugin is here for you, just go to the Windy Plugins in the menu and explore.

Passage Planner & The Buoy — new community-built plugins for boating

Planning a trip at sea? Passage Planner calculates optimal sailing and powerboat routes directly inside Windy — for cruisers, racers, and anyone heading offshore.

It uses isochrone expansion (the routing method professional marine software relies on) to combine your boat's polar performance data with Windy's global forecast models, accounting for wind, ocean currents, swell, and land obstacles. Routes optimize for speed, comfort, and safety.

Editable polars match your vessel's performance. Compare forecast models, set coastal safety margins, use conditional motoring in light winds, add waypoints for multi-leg passages, and save routes for later. With multi-planning, the plugin tests different departure times to identify the best window to depart.

Want live wave conditions to pair with the forecast? The Buoy plugin pulls live wave buoy readings from trusted sources like Candhis and NOAA NDBC. The latest update also lets you compare measured wave heights against the forecasted values — a quick reality check before you head out.

    New radars in Europe

Windy’s radar network has expanded with two new stations: Tenerife in the Canary Islands and Salamanca (Guadramiro) in Spain. The update brings sharper radar coverage for pilots, sailors, surfers, and anyone tracking fast-changing weather in the region.

Android and Wear OS Users: Flexi Widget, Hourly Widget & Minor polishing

Two new home screen widgets land in v50. The Flexi Widget is the next-generation daily widget — cleaner layout, sharper data, fully resizable. Alongside it, a redesigned resizable Hourly Widget.

Wear OS users also get smoother sync between handheld and wearable, plus a cleaner layout for daily notifications.

Version 49 is a major milestone that makes Windy significantly more capable on mobile while improving performance and interaction across platforms, bringing advanced plugins and a smoother Leaflet GL–powered map experience so you can access desktop-level tools wherever you are.

    Key Updates

    • Expanded Airports POIs for Aviation community
    • Local forecast models on iOS Widgets
    • New Garmin Weather Widget Lite

A faster and smoother app experience powered by new technology

Under the hood, Windy has transitioned to Leaflet GL — a major technical upgrade that significantly improves map performance.

Thanks to extensive community testing, we are delivering a faster, more stable experience when exploring layers on both desktop and mobile.

    What you will notice:

    • Smoother zooming and panning
    • Greater stability when working with complex layers
    • Improved responsiveness on mobile devices

As part of this transition, Windy now supports double-tap and drag on phones, making it faster and more intuitive to explore forecasts with one hand.

This upgrade applies to all layers except the Windy Premium 3D globe.

External plugins and GPX uploader are now on mobile versions

Until now, plugins were primarily a desktop experience. With the new version, Windy plugins are fully accessible on mobile devices.

    • Access and install external plugins
You need to be logged in to install and activate plugins. All plugins are automatically synced to your account via the cloud.
    • Access the Windy Plugins Guide on how to develop your own plugin
    • Join the Windy Plugins developer community

In the Extend your Windy section, you can now also find an uploader for your favorite routes and locations. Upload, display, and share your KML, GPX, or GeoJSON files —now also directly from your mobile phone.

Explore the wide range of Windy Plugins developed by our community and discover new ways to tailor Windy to your needs.

Built for IFR & VFR Pilots

Windy has become a trusted weather tool for everyone from general aviation pilots to airline crews. Airport POIs have been refined to support that and to provide smoother pre-flight briefings and en-route decision-making.

    Airport POIs

    • More detailed runway information, coordinates, and ICAO/IATA codes
    • An enhanced METAR & TAF section with current VFR/IFR status and nearby airports with their METARs, runway wind conditions, webcams, and detailed meteograms
    • NOTAMs available in raw and decoded formats, with the option to mark as read

Route Planner (available to Windy Premium users)

    • A faster Route Planner — type departure and destination ICAO or IATA codes (e.g.,KLAX KJFK for ICAO, or LAX JFK for IATA) in the Search bar and open the route instantly

These upgrades make critical flight information clearer, faster to access, and easier to interpret — when timing matters most.

iOS widgets with extended local forecast models

Windy widgets on iOS now support additional high-resolution local forecast models:

    • North America: HRRR, HRDPS, NAM
    • Europe: UKV, AROME, ICON, ALADIN
    • Asia: MSM
    • Australia: ACCESS

    Available:

    • On iPhone and iPad widgets
    • In mirrored iPhone widgets on macOS and CarPlay

This gives you faster access to precise local forecasts — directly from your home screen or dashboard.

New Lite version of the Garmin Weather Widget

We’re introducing Weather Widget Lite — a streamlined, lightweight version of the full Windy Weather Widget, designed to run smoothly on Garmin devices that were previously limited in supporting the full version.

By optimizing performance and reducing system demands, the Lite version makes Windy available on a broader range of devices, including models with hardware limitations.

The widget works in both color and black-and-white modes:

    • In color mode, it includes lightning detection (a new feature for the Weather Widget overall).
    • In black-and-white mode, lightning is not displayed due to technical limitations of these devices.

    The Lite version brings you

    • Point Forecast
    • Radar
    • 3-Hourly Forecast
    • Daily Forecast

The widget is now available on some of the most popular Garmin devices, including:

    • fēnix® 6 series
    • Forerunner® 245 / 745 / 945
    • Instinct® 2 series
    • Enduro™
    • quatix® 6 series*

See the full list and download on Garmin Connect IQ.

Tracking storm on Garmin Weather Widget (full version)

The main Garmin Weather Widget has also been updated to improve clarity and reliability.

    • lightning detection on the radar, providing faster visual insight into active storms directly from the widget
    • general optimizations and stability fixes

With fast access to essential weather information directly on your wrist, Windy continues to support athletes, pilots, sailors, and explorers who rely on reliable forecasts in motion.

Minor Improvements: Built for What Comes Next

Sections across the app are now fully unified in our preferred dark theme, creating a more consistent and comfortable experience.

Behind the scenes, Version 49 delivers important stability improvements and technical refinements that strengthen performance across web and mobile.

    What’s improved under the hood:

    • Expanded Dark Mode support across key plugins, including Login, Consent, Subscription, Context Menu, Air Quality, Stations, and CAP Alerts.
    • More reliable external plugin syncing, now properly updating across devices and cloud sessions.
    • Improved WebGL recovery handling, reducing unexpected reloads and visual glitches.
    • Fixes for mobile deeplinks, airport interactions, and Route Planner behavior (including proper IATA/ICAO handling).
    • Enhanced METAR/TAF parsing and airport plugin reliability.
    • Add precipitation type visibility toggle in the Settings.
    • Internal refactors improving login flow, plugin initialization, and overall app stability.

These improvements lay the groundwork for faster development, smoother performance, and a more robust Windy experience going forward.

Windy Gets Smarter with Speed Vector and iOS Webcam Widgets

Windy adds one-tap Find My Location for instant local forecasts, sounding graphs, route planning, and sun and moon positions, plus automatic GPS tracking for moving users and new iOS webcam widgets that bring thousands of cameras to the home screen.

Find my location feature in one tap

The search bar now does more. Tap the "Find My Location" icon to instantly pull up the local forecast for your exact location and elevation, explore the sounding graph, jump into route planning, or check the sun and moon position — no typing needed.

Speed vector for pilots, sailors and anyone on the move

With "Find My Location" activated, Windy now automatically detects when you're moving at speeds above 3 m/s (6.7 mph, 10.8 km/h, 5.8 kts)* and starts tracking your GPS position. Your trajectory shows two markers — where you'll be in 5 and 10 minutes at your current pace.

*The threshold will be lowered to 1m/s (1.94 kts) in the next Windy update — thanks to feedback from our sailing community.

    iOS Webcam Widgets

Bring your favourite webcams straight to your home screen — choose from over 67,000 cameras around the world. Stack same-size widgets to save space and keep every view just one swipe away.

Holiday Update: New Tools for Winter Weather and Ocean Forecasts, Meet Version 48

Windy releases a holiday update with clearer winter forecasts, new Wave Energy views, lightning and flow vectors on mobile widgets, Android Weather Station widget support, smoother radar and satellite layers, expanded radar coverage, and many fixes and stability improvements.

Ever wondered whether that blob on the radar is rain or snow? Or how powerful the waves actually are, not just how high?

With our Holiday Update, we focused on exactly these kinds of questions. This release brings clearer winter forecasts, deeper ocean insights, smoother performance, and a few thoughtful extras across the app and widgets.

Here’s what’s new, improved, and fixed in Windy's new version 48

Precipitation Type Added to Weather Radar

One of the most-requested upgrades is here. 🌧️

You can now see whether strong precipitation is falling as rain or snow directly on the Weather Radar layer, making winter conditions clearer at a glance and helping you better assess travel, outdoor plans, and storm impacts.

A New Way to Read the Ocean: Wave Energy

If you spend time on (or watching) the ocean, this update is for you 👀

    Wave Energy is now available:

    • as a brand-new standalone map layer
    • and directly inside the Waves & Tides forecast

It goes beyond wave height and helps you understand the actual power of the waves, a valuable new perspective for surfers, sailors, kiters, and marine forecasters alike.

Lightning & Flow Vectors on Mobile Widgets

Storm tracking just got smarter. ⚡

You can now see lightning strikes and flow vectors on the Weather Radar and Satellite widgets on iOS and Android. That means not only spotting active storms, but also quickly understanding where they’re heading next, right from your home screen.

    (P.S. Garmin upgrade coming soon.)

Weather Station Widget Comes to Android

Android users, this one’s for you.

The Weather Station widget will be now available on Android, bringing real-time local observations straight to your home screen for quick, no-fuss weather checks. Some of you might already see this update, and it will be available for all users in the following two days.

Sun & Moon Position Anywhere on the Map

Planning around daylight, sunrise, sunset, or moon phases?

You can now see the Sun and Moon position for any place directly on the map, a small addition that’s especially useful for photographers, pilots, sailors, hikers, and outdoor planners.

    How to find it:

🖥️ On desktop: Right-click anywhere on the map
📲 On mobile: Tap anywhere on the map and find it in the top menu

    New External Plugin: The Buoy

Built by community developer Thomas Cailhol, The Buoy plugin brings detailed ocean buoy observations and forecasts into Windy.

You’ll find it in the External Plugin Gallery, another great example of how the Windy community helps expand what the platform can do.

    Smoother Radar & Satellite Layers

Behind the scenes, both the Weather Radar and Satellite layers now run on new technology.

What does that mean for you?

    • smoother scrolling
    • faster loading
    • more fluid animations

It’s especially noticeable when tracking active weather, where speed and responsiveness really matter.

    Expanded Weather Radar Coverage

We’ve improved radar coverage in several regions, including:

    🇮🇳 India, 🇿🇦 South Africa, 🇱🇸 Lesotho, 🇸🇿 Eswatini, 🇲🇺 Mauritius

This brings more reliable precipitation data to areas where coverage has traditionally been limited.

    Easier Forecast Model Switching

You can now switch forecast models directly under the pin icon in the mobile version, making comparisons quicker and easier, especially for those who like to dig deeper into the data.

    Weekends Highlighted in the Timeline

Weekends are now clearly marked in the timeline, making it easier to plan trips, activities, and forecasts at a glance.

Found something that doesn’t look quite right?

You can now report bugs directly in the app, helping us spot issues faster and keep improving Windy together.

    Fixes

As always, we’ve also spent time polishing things up:

    • Fixed issues with the ICON-D2 model and timeline display
    • Restored speed adjustment in the Satellite layer
    • Resolved Firefox-specific glitches
    • Fixed map and color scale inconsistencies
    • Plus 50+ smaller bug fixes and stability improvements

Windy keeps evolving thanks to you and the way you use the app in real-world conditions.
