Live Alerts: Tropical Cyclones & CAP Alerts
Real-time warnings for the storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and fire risks
Live Alerts are the automatic, real-time hazard warnings Windy sends straight to your phone for weather that needs your attention now or in the coming days. First introduced last year with Live Storm and Heavy Rain Alerts, in the newest version of Windy, they gain two powerful new types and one big new capability.
🌀 Tropical Cyclones
Each alert gives you the storm's name, category, and the day it's forecast to reach your current or chosen location. You're notified as soon as any forecast model predicts a tropical cyclone (hurricane, typhoon) heading your way: one alert per forecast day, never twice for the same one. Tap the notification for full storm details, which you'll also find inside Windy under the Hurricane tracker layer.
📢 CAP Alerts
Official government warnings (tornadoes, floods, storms, wind emergencies, and more) issued by civil protection authorities via the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP). Windy checks your current or chosen location every 20 minutes and alerts you just once per warning, with no repeat pings, whether it's for today or several days out. Tap the notification to read the full CAP detail, found inside Windy under the Weather warnings layer.
How to Turn Live Alerts On
Open the Windy app → Menu → My Alerts, and switch on the Live Alerts you want. They're location-based, so grant location access and stay online to receive them.
📍 Any location, not just where you are
Until now, Live Alerts followed your device's current position. Now you can set one for any fixed place on the map, so you're warned about a coastline you're sailing toward, an airport you're flying into, or the place your family lives, before you ever get there. Your current position now also shows its place name, so a glance tells you the alert is watching the right spot.

⚡ Storm Alerts
Lightning-storm warnings with a 5 to 30-minute heads-up. Windy tracks where lightning is striking and combines it with storm-cloud movement to catch approaching storms, alerting you when one is within 5 km, before it's overhead.
☔ Rain Alerts
Radar-based precipitation alerts: whether it's raining at your location right now or up to an hour ahead, with the expected intensity and type (rain or snow).
Built for sailors, pilots, coastal residents, and anyone who travels into weather they need to see coming.
Coverage varies by region
Storm Alerts rely on lightning-detection networks, Rain Alerts on radar coverage, and CAP Alerts on whether your local authorities publish official warnings. If a layer's data reaches your area, the matching alert does too.
Live Alerts are the hazard warnings Windy sends you automatically (storms, rain, cyclones, and official CAP warnings), while Forecast Alerts are the custom alerts you set yourself for specific conditions at your favorite places. Live Alerts are set up and delivered in the Windy mobile app (they aren't available on the desktop site), and notifications currently arrive as push notifications on your phone. To create and receive any alert, you'll need to be signed in to your free or Premium Windy account.

My Alerts is where all the alerts you create live, listed by place, ready to edit or delete anytime. From the menu, pick any location and set a custom Forecast Alert, or a Live Alert.

Add air-quality and pollen alert types to any place you watch, and get notified when forecast conditions cross your threshold. It builds on the Air Quality Index layers we introduced last year (powered by CAMS), turning forecast data into alerts you can act on. Pollen alerts are currently available for Europe only.

Multimodel Approach to Weather Forecasting: Predictability and Probability
Windy adds forecast predictability to point forecasts with meteoblue Learning MultiModel, helping users judge how reliable the weather outlook is at a specific location. Colored dots now show confidence from green to burgundy alongside the daily forecast.
Imagine you’re planning an outdoor event. The forecast says: “On Wednesday, temperatures will reach 25 °C, with cloudy skies and no precipitation.” Sounds perfect. But can you really be sure it won’t rain?

The answer becomes clearer once you add one key piece of information: predictability. The forecast itself may not change, but the decision you make based on it certainly can.
With the meteoblue Learning MultiModel (mLM), Windy.com now shows forecast predictability for a specific location, giving you a quick sense of how reliable the forecast is.
Since version 50.1, predictability has been shown on Windy.com in the point forecast as coloured dots next to each day: green means the forecast is reliable; orange and red indicate increasing uncertainty; and burgundy means the forecast is likely to change
In the following sections, we’ll explain what predictability means, how it is derived, and why multimodel forecasts can provide a more reliable picture of the weather.
Forecast predictability
Forecast predictability describes how confidently we can estimate the future evolution of the weather and how far in advance such a forecast remains meaningful.
Forecast predictability is limited both by the inherent nature of the atmosphere and by our ability to accurately describe and model its behavior.
The atmosphere is a dynamic, nonlinear system in which even very small differences in initial conditions can gradually lead to significantly different outcomes. This property, known as deterministic chaos, fundamentally limits our ability to forecast the weather.

In addition, a number of unavoidable errors arise when numerically modelling the future state of the atmosphere. These are related to both the simplification of complex physical processes in models and their limited resolution, as well as to the fact that initial conditions are never known perfectly, since they are based on a limited number of observations.

Approaches to predictability
Predictability can be expressed in various ways. In practice, ensemble forecasts and multimodel approaches are most commonly used.
Ensemble forecasts
Ensemble forecasts aim to capture the sensitivity of a forecast to atmospheric initial conditions. They are based on multiple runs of a single numerical model, each executed with slightly different initial conditions and configurations. These small intentional changes are called perturbations.

For example, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) runs an ensemble forecasting system consisting of one unperturbed control forecast and 50 perturbed members. Together, they represent a range of possible scenarios for the future evolution of the atmosphere.

The level of agreement among these scenarios provides information about forecast reliability and allows estimation of the probability of specific weather events. Strong agreement among most members usually indicates higher forecast reliability, while large differences between members often point to a more complex and less predictable meteorological situation.

Multimodel approach
A multimodel approach combines outputs from several different numerical models. As with ensemble forecasts, comparing outputs from individual models allows us to estimate both the likely evolution of the weather and the forecast uncertainty.
While ensemble forecasts are part of the numerical prediction process itself, multimodel approaches are applied later in the post-processing stage.
Multimodelling technique
At a basic level, the multimodel approach can be compared to the work of an experienced meteorologist. A multimodel system considers several available model outputs and, based on past performance, evaluates which models are most reliable in a given situation. For example, it can take into account how individual models perform in a particular region or under specific weather conditions.

Like a forecaster, it may then give more weight to one model or combine several model outputs into a final forecast. Modern multimodel systems do this automatically using statistical methods and, increasingly, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

Advantages of multimodeling
A multimodel approach leverages the strengths of multiple numerical models while reducing their individual errors.
Each model uses slightly different physical formulations, parameterizations, resolutions, and input data, and therefore their performance may vary depending on the specific situation. When their outputs are properly combined and statistically adjusted, the resulting forecast is often more stable and accurate than that of a single model.
Modern multimodel systems also enable automatic evaluation of individual model performance, dynamic weighting, bias correction, and the generation of probabilistic forecasts. This is why multimodel approaches are increasingly used in modern meteorology and weather applications.

Modern multimodel systems and machine learning
Modern multimodel systems increasingly rely on artificial intelligence methods, particularly machine learning. Their main goal is to improve the final forecast by learning from large amounts of historical data.
Using extensive archives of meteorological observations, reanalyses (e.g., ERA5), and numerical model outputs, machine learning algorithms learn relationships between atmospheric variables and the resulting forecast.

- which models tend to be the most reliable in specific situations,
- what systematic errors individual models typically make,
- how these errors vary depending on region, season, or type of weather.

How modern multimodel forecasts are created
Modern multimodel systems using machine learning typically operate in two main phases: training and operational forecasting.
Training phase
During the training phase, a machine learning system works with large amounts of historical data. It uses archived numerical model forecasts, ensemble forecasts, radar and satellite data, weather station observations, and reanalyses such as ERA5 from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), operated by ECMWF.

This allows the system to compare past model predictions with actual observed weather.
From these historical comparisons, it learns to recognize the typical characteristics of individual models as well as their systematic errors, such as the long-term overestimation of precipitation.
Based on this experience, a statistical model is built to automatically determine which models are likely to perform best in a given forecasting situation.
The system can dynamically adjust model weights, perform bias correction, and refine the forecast for a specific location.
This is followed by the operational forecasting phase.

Operational multimodel forecasting
The system first collects outputs from various numerical models, both global and regional. Some multimodel systems also use individual ensemble forecast members, for example from ECMWF or GFS.
Outputs from individual models are interpolated onto a unified grid and then statistically adjusted to improve comparability and better reflect local conditions. Methods such as downscaling, elevation correction, and local calibration are used for this purpose.
Based on a statistical model trained on historical data, weights are assigned to individual models and dynamically adjusted according to the current situation.

At the same time, systematic errors in individual models identified during the training phase are corrected.
The individual model outputs are then combined into a final forecast (guidance). The result may be either a single value of the predicted parameter or a probabilistic forecast (for example, the probability of precipitation, thunderstorms, or exceeding a certain temperature threshold), along with information about predictability.
Some modern multimodel systems also incorporate nowcasting.
Nowcasting
Nowcasting refers to very short-term weather forecasting, typically covering a time horizon from tens of minutes up to a few hours.
It is primarily based on current observations, especially radar and satellite data, and tracks the actual evolution of the atmosphere in real time. Unlike numerical models, which compute the future state of the atmosphere using physical equations, nowcasting often relies on extrapolating the current state, for example the movement of precipitation or thunderstorms.

In a multimodel approach, nowcasting complements traditional numerical models. It helps bridge the current state of the atmosphere and model forecasts, refining the short-term forecast especially when rapidly evolving phenomena such as showers or thunderstorms are not accurately captured by the models.

Modern weather forecasting is thus shifting from interpreting individual model outputs toward the comprehensive integration of multiple data sources and advanced processing methods. At the same time, this approach remains strongly dependent on data generated by physical models.
meteoblue Learning MultiModel on Windy.com
In the Windy.com point forecast for a specific location, you can view not only outputs from individual models, but also the multimodel forecast developed by the Swiss meteorological company meteoblue.
meteoblue Learning MultiModel (mLM) uses modern post-processing methods, including statistical and machine learning techniques, to improve numerical weather prediction model outputs. It is based on a combination of 30–40 numerical weather models, depending on the location, and current observations, for example from weather stations, radar, and other sources.
For precipitation verification, meteoblue initially worked with data from approximately 90,000 stations. After quality control, nearly 32,000 of them were included in the verification. Blue dots indicate meteorological stations; meteoblue
In mLM, a new value of the predicted parameter is computed using weights and corrections derived during training from a large set of historical data. In some parts of the forecast horizon, this value may match a specific model or be derived directly from observed data or extrapolated observations.

mLM is implemented for a wide range of meteorological parameters. On Windy.com, we display, for example, air temperature, dew point temperature, cloud cover, precipitation (totals and type), wind speed and gusts, as well as predictability. meteoblue also offers additional parameters, such as solar radiation or wind at turbine hub height.

Compared to individual numerical models, mLM achieves very good results, and its accuracy continues to improve. A 2025 study using measurements from more than 30,000 stations worldwide showed more than 20% improvement in precipitation forecast accuracy compared to forecasts based on a single model output.

📲 How to Install Windy on Garmin
Open the Connect IQ app on your phone, select your device, and search for Windy. Tap Install, confirm the terms of use and you're done.
To change the forecast model, units, location, favourites, and more, access the Windy app settings inside the Connect IQ app on your phone.
📡 Understanding What You See
The Windy.com radar gives you more than a snapshot — it shows where precipitation has been and where it's heading.
Next to the last radar frame, you'll see a timestamp that alternates between the frame time and minutes since the last update, so you always know how fresh the data is. Around the radar itself, two rings of information work together:
Inner circle
Traces the movement of the front over the past 60 minutes, so you can see where it came from.
Outer circles
Forecast the movement of rain over the next 60 minutes. Colour-coded by intensity, so you can see exactly what's coming to your location and how heavy it will be.
Next to the radar, the data screen provides a 3-hour block forecast covering temperature, precipitation, wind speed, wind gusts, and wind direction — including your current heading and a North indicator.

No coverage — your location is outside the radar coverage area
🛠️ Troubleshooting
"IQ!" error on the watch
The app crashed on startup — usually a temporary memory conflict. Fix: uninstall Windy from the watch → restart both the watch and your phone → reinstall from Connect IQ.
"NO PHONE" / no data loading
The watch can't reach your phone even when Bluetooth appears connected. Fix: toggle Bluetooth off and back on → force-close and reopen Garmin Connect on your phone → open Windy on the watch again.
App not found in the Connect IQ Store
If your device isn't on the compatible list, it won't appear in search results. Check the compatible devices list inside each product page. If your model isn't listed, it's due to hardware memory limits — as an alternative, try the Windy widget on your phone's home or lock screen.
Wind data showing zero / no arrow
Usually a connectivity issue. Make sure your phone has an active internet connection and location services enabled, then restart the activity.
Battery draining faster than usual
Background weather refresh uses battery — this is expected. For a lower-drain option, use the Lite Widget (no radar), or reduce how often you open the radar screen during activities.
Location not updating / wrong location
For best results, set your weather location to use your phone in Garmin Connect:
More → Settings → User Settings → Weather Location → Use Phone Location — and make sure the app has continuous location access permission on your phone. Exact GPS accuracy isn't required.
The Widget can also trigger a GPS search directly from the watch using the Start button. The Watch Face can't initiate a GPS search, but uses the last known location from a previous activity.
If both phone and watch locations are available, the app uses the most recent one. If the phone location causes issues, switch to Use Watch Location Only in the app settings. For a fully fixed position, set a manual location with Use Custom Location (coordinates in decimal degrees).

Wind Trajectories — a new built-in plugin
The Windy picker has a new arrival for everyone who watches the air move. Wind Trajectories traces where the wind would carry you at any altitude and any forecast hour — scrub the timeline and the path redraws for this afternoon, tomorrow, or beyond.
Built first for hot air balloon pilots, but useful far beyond the basket: glider and light aircraft pre-flight planning, anticipating headwinds, tracking how a storm cell will travel, predicting where wildfire smoke or pollen will land.
Note: trajectories show horizontal drift only — ascent and descent aren't modeled.

Passage Planner & The Buoy — new community-built plugins for boating
Planning a trip at sea? Passage Planner calculates optimal sailing and powerboat routes directly inside Windy — for cruisers, racers, and anyone heading offshore.
It uses isochrone expansion (the routing method professional marine software relies on) to combine your boat's polar performance data with Windy's global forecast models, accounting for wind, ocean currents, swell, and land obstacles. Routes optimize for speed, comfort, and safety.
Editable polars match your vessel's performance. Compare forecast models, set coastal safety margins, use conditional motoring in light winds, add waypoints for multi-leg passages, and save routes for later. With multi-planning, the plugin tests different departure times to identify the best window to depart.

Until now, plugins were primarily a desktop experience. With the new version, Windy plugins are fully accessible on mobile devices.

Windy adds one-tap Find My Location for instant local forecasts, sounding graphs, route planning, and sun and moon positions, plus automatic GPS tracking for moving users and new iOS webcam widgets that bring thousands of cameras to the home screen.
Find my location feature in one tap
The search bar now does more. Tap the "Find My Location" icon to instantly pull up the local forecast for your exact location and elevation, explore the sounding graph, jump into route planning, or check the sun and moon position — no typing needed.
Speed vector for pilots, sailors and anyone on the move
With "Find My Location" activated, Windy now automatically detects when you're moving at speeds above 3 m/s (6.7 mph, 10.8 km/h, 5.8 kts)* and starts tracking your GPS position. Your trajectory shows two markers — where you'll be in 5 and 10 minutes at your current pace.
*The threshold will be lowered to 1m/s (1.94 kts) in the next Windy update — thanks to feedback from our sailing community.
iOS Webcam Widgets
Bring your favourite webcams straight to your home screen — choose from over 67,000 cameras around the world. Stack same-size widgets to save space and keep every view just one swipe away.
